I figured several of the veterans on here could provide some insight on motor maintenance. Looking into an annual service by a marine shop it appears that it can average $250-$300. I read through the motor manual and am considering getting everything and doing it myself. The marine shop prices seem pretty excessive and it would seem fairly simple to do my own maintenance. Any advice on this would be appreciated. By the way my motor is a 2008 F90 Yamaha 4 stroke.

I do all of the maintenance on my motor (2006 Suzuki 4 stroke), I just can't see paying all that money for something so simple. The maintenance I do on mine is the typical plugs replaced, oil/fuel filters replaced, oil change, lower unit lube change and fuel/water separator replaced. I have had the boat since February 2006 and have never had a problem with it, still runs great and always cranks the first turn of the key. I do recommend buying one of those SELOC motor maintenance books from West Marine though, they walk you through everything step by step with good illustrations. The only tool I had to buy that I didn't currently have was a pump for the lower unit lube ( under $10 @ WM). I would suggest having a buddy who has done it before help you the first time and then you will see how easy it is to work on.If you perform your own basic maintenance on your car (oil/brakes) you will be just fine. |

where I bought my motor the do the service but charge an extra $100 to plug it in....Thats BS... The shop guy said if no alarms have sounded its a waste of time. Is this true? I know with my car when you do maintenence you dont plug it in. If the engine light isnt on why do it. As far as the other stuff its easier than your car. |

On the flip side, they might overlook something that costs you your motor...

with out the proper tool ,manuals, readers etc you will be shooting in the dark. They might pick up one problem that will save you a motor. |
