Anyone here ever try American Shad as cut bait for catfish?

I used some drifting on the Tailrace last Friday and did not catch a thing, but neither did herring or shrimp...

I reckon I don't know how to drift for cats. Dropping the bait to the bottom and cranking it up 2-3 ft resulted in nothing but a couple of log snags.
