Posted - 02/27/2012 : 09:32:58 AM My Father and I went to the Rediversion Canal to see about catching some shad for him to use as crab bait and me to use as bait for my trotline and for me to maybe catch my first shad. We arrived to the canal at approx. 7 am to a beautiful day despite the reports of showers and thunderstorms. We ran to the RR Crossing and fished close to there competing with all the locals lineing the bank. When we arrived and anchored to start fishing we were the only boat along with the other boat with two friends that joined us. The other boat setup about 300 yards from the Trussel. We were alot closer. My father and I started fishing. After about 10 minutes we started to have some bites and catching some good size shad. The bite was on for about 10 minutes. We caught and kept 8 Bucks, released 4, and had about 8 to 10 pop off or come off. After about 10 minutes the bite cut off just as soon as it started.

We sat in the same spot for most of the time that we fished. We continued to cast and try to catch the occasional stray. We caught 2 in the next 45 minutes. During that time the other boat that came with us had not caught anything so they pulled up and went to try the Santee River for some shad. About 10 minutes after they left we started to get some more bites but not at all as quick as last time. We fished for a little bit getting the strays but then a school came through and it was on again. We threw 8 more, for a total of 19, in the bucket and started to throw the rest back due to us never catching that much and we thought the limit was 10 per person per day. I texted my wife and some buddies, thinkin they could look on the DNR site, and they all came back within a couple minutes with pictures of the page that stated that the limit was 10 pp per day except in the Santee River and the Rediversion Canal where it was 20 pp per day. So we started to keep some more. But 2 minutes after we got the good news of the limit status the bite cut off again. We continued to fish for another 45 minutes to an hour and were about ready to call it a day seeing as we caught more already than we ever thought we would. We were abouyt ready to call it a day and another school must have cruised by cause almost all of the bank fisherman hooked up at the same time aqnd we started pulling them in again. After about 10 minutes the bite stopped. We fished for a while longer catching strays and we decided to go ahead and head home. When we got everything squared away in the boat we cranked up and started to head back to the landing. Once we idled past the bank fisherman I throttled up but the motor started knocking. We cut it off and found out that the oil resivoir was very low. We paddled to the bank and walked back to see if one of the Fisherman on the bank would be willing to help us get to a store to get some oil. We found a nice Gentleman that said that he told his wife about 30 minutes ago that he was heading her way but that he was finally about finished fishing and he would take my dad to town to find some oil for the boat. I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Mr. Tisdale (?) for helping us out in our time of need. Come to find out my dad works with Mr. Tisdales' son at on e of the Electric Co-ops he does business with. Once my dad got back and I had caught 4 more while he was gone and I drift fished we oiled up the boat, fished a bit more drifting, and headed home. We ended up with 30 Bucks and 2 Roe. We released about 10 to 12 all together and had around 20 pop off or pull off. And the whole day was warm, breezy, and no rain at all while we were fishing.

On the way home we got a call from our buddies that left to try the Santee River and they caught about 15 shad there.
So, I hope when the peak season for the Shad hits my dad and I can go back down to have some more fun.

Posted - 02/29/2012 : 12:30:32 PM LargeBarge, That's great info! I've only really started fishing in the last year and a half and can certainly use all the pointers I can get.
Starting to *cough*cough* not feel so well. Maybe I can *cough*cough* apply that info to feel better? ;)

Posted - 02/29/2012 : 09:28:59 AM jtg404 - Where were ya'll fishing monday and tuesday? Wherever you were that sounds like a day full of fun there to me.
furrypawz - No problem. You probably already know but we were using a two hook rig with 10# line and we had (2)1/16 oz jigheads (painted or un-painted, didn't see too much of a difference) tipped with a 2" chartruese grub. We used both tube and curly tail grubs and they had shiney specs in them and the curly tail seemed to work better. Try to find a grub that has a slender twisty tail that would give good action when fished and you should have a blast like I did. Well, there is my two cents. Take it for what it's worth. Good Luck.
I forgot to mention that my dad was fishing with a small zebco 33 and I had a 12' light action Whoppin' stick jiggin' pole with 10# test on a spinning reel and that was fun to haul in those hard fighting fish there especially when you would occasionally hook 2 fish at a time.

Posted - 02/28/2012 : 4:58:21 PM We were fishing in the ReDiversion Canal. It is where the Santee River dumps into just below St. Stephens. If you look at a map of that part of the state the ReDiversion Canal is on the NE portion of Lake Moultrie near state road 45 . We put in at Arrowhead landing if that helps anything?
