Hey everyone-

I'll be heading down to IOP for spring break again in a few weeks so I've been perusing the forums for updates, reports, etc., and from from what I've gathered, the Grillage (Fort Moultrie area right?) is one of the most productive locations on Sullivan's Island. I have all the gear I need, but I just have a few questions about the area. How good is access to the area, i.e. parking/walking access? What are the best tides/areas to target? Also, once the water warms up, would it be worth getting up extra early and trying some topwaters for trout?

Thanks for the help.

From the beach the area behind Ft Moultrie can be productive. (Technically the Grillage is an area that can only be reached by boat, off Sullivans Island on the edge of the shipping channel.) There are really two spots to consider at the fort. Go to the end of Station 12 (just past the fort). Small parking area with access to beach with a couple rock groins. The other area is the beach to your left if you face the water, directly behind the fort. You can walk around the point to your left at low tide from Station 12, or park in the lot at the end of Palmetto St on Poe Ave. Walk past the cannons, across the field to the beach access. There is a rock groin straight ahead of you that can be productive. You will also see a red buoy out in the water. The Grillage is the area out past the red buoy running along the shipping channel out to the entrance to the harbor. You will proabably see boats anchored out there if the reds are biting. Fish anywhere from the rock groin down to the point on your left where the island bends around to the ocean. When the water is warm, getting there just before sunrise, or just before sunset, can be effective. I prefer the first 2-3 hours after high, or the first 2-3 hours after low tide. Never had much luck with topwater, but don't do it much. Mostly cut mullet or shrimp on the bottom. I have heard a better spot for trout is around Stations 28 to 32, on the Sullivans side of Breach Inlet. Feel free to email or PM me if you have more questions.
