Posted - 03/21/2012 : 1:39:49 PM tailwalker, is it 14.32"? I always heard it was 15.11" that was too tall for them.
In all seriousness, if a turkey bird can't see around him, he ain't gonna be going in that field. Try to get him in open areas surrounding the field. Good luck. |

Posted - 03/20/2012 : 08:16:24 AM The largest tom I've seen taken was by my buddy who had seen something moving in an overgrown pasture (waist high grass)next to a cornstubble field that we were using to leave the mornings unseccessful hunt in the woods. When he realized it was a turkey we both dropped to our knees, started calling and got one response but that was it. We always traded off on who was shooting/calling and it should have been my turn for pulling the trigger but I couldn't see what he was seeing so I told him to take the shot which he did. He walked out with a #28'r that had 1.75" spurs and there were 6 hens that took off flying when he shot!! Nearest woods was probably 100 yards away. So never rule out anything!! |

Posted - 03/20/2012 : 08:06:30 AM I would have to agree with what Estate said, however nothing is set in stone. Have seen them feeding the edges of wheat fields that have headed out when the field is 24" tall, and have seen them come through dog fennel 4ft tall...but all in all I would feel much more comfortable hunting a plot that was under 12". just my.02 |

Posted - 03/19/2012 : 5:00:06 PM Turkeys like to see what is around them. The more you obstruct their view, the less likely they are be there. Too many natural predators that could hide in 12-18 inches of grass. Of course I have seen them in wheat fields with only their heads showing walking around? Thats my 2 cents. |
