weather man said 2-3 today... turned out 2 + 3 + 2. rode out at 26 knots, but once the baits hit the water it was too rough to keep a constant trolling speed. i was in a trough and couldn't see over the top of the next wave, called it quits and headed in. took about 4.5 hours starting at 8 knots straight into it, and i KNOW there was at least a few 7' ers out there. that poor boat seemed like it stood straight up but the bow never stuffed on the way down. wish i could have gone friday! will be out again when the forecast is 1-2' haha

you could say that again! my heart said try it but my brain said 4-5? naaaahhhh a chance in h3ll! no worries though. ill be out there soon enough. it just sucks when you take tests early for school then take the day off for no reason. waste gas from aiken to edisto. have no money really to begin with since school eats most of it. but as lynn suggested, im still here to type this!

We went today, it was calm enough to take a small center console to G-town hole. We were on a big sporty, and it slicked out as the day went on.

Everybody needs to realize the forecast is just that - No guarantee! Betcha everybody on this forum has gone out on that 2' forecast only to have their azz handed to them! This is the one thing I hate about offshore fishing! Right prediction = safety =fun! On another note he is only 10 miles off with a light wind! It will pickup! Good job on making it out!

The forecast is for the wind and waves to increase to 10-15kt and 3-4. If that forecast is right or worse, would you want to be 30 miles offshore in an 18ft boat.

I have been out when that buoy said it was 2 foot 8 sec. But the ocean was NASTY. It does not do a good reflecting a sloppy ocean

It is always good to get others opinion but always you your own head and experience as a guideline.

Here is a good write-up about how quickly the weather can change. And this is close to shore. think about how it would be if you were 30,40, 50 miles from the beach:

One more thing about the OD18. I'll tell ya sea story.

One night 2 summers ago, on a run from Daufuskie Island to Charleston, we got caught in a developing tropical storm. It was calm when we left Bloody Point at sunset, and set the GPS on the Charleston sea buoy, the weather report was good. 2 hours out the wind shifted to the northeast and started blowing 15-20. This ain't good, I thought, 15 miles offshore. Listened to the weather again, no change in the report, so we kept going and the wind kept increasing. We started slowing down more as the wind picked up to about 30. Listen to the weather again and they say a tropical storm was developing 50 miles SE of Charleston, winds increasing to 45 kts, gusting to 60, small craft should remain in port. Great. I was wishing I was in port. So was my wife.

It kept building and we kept slowing down until I was only making about 5 kts, still heading for Charleston. About 10 pm a Mayday call came over the radio. It was a 70' shrimp boat sinking off Edisto Island. I punched his numbers in my GPS and was only 10 miles away, but it was 10 miles straight to windward and I couldn't do anything to help him. The CG sent a chopper to them. Then another Mayday came over the radio, a big sportfishing boat had swamped and was sinking. I punched in his numbers and saw he was right off Charleston Harbor. Couldn't help him either. Starting to worry about ourselves a little bit. By now the seas seemed at least 12-15 feet, and in the dark I couldn't see anything but breaking water. Our headway stopped to almost nothing, couldn't see, couldn't breathe and every wave was breaking over the boat. The only thing I could do was to turn around and run with the sea, so I did. We had 2 choices to get back in, St. Helena, or Port Royal and I chose Port Royal because I know it better and it's better marked, plus the sea allowed us to run in that direction best. I set the GPS on the Port Royal Buoy about 18 miles away. We were holding our own just fine with the big following sea, good enough to dry my eyes, finally light a cigarette and make a drink Then it started pouring rain.

With these big boats sinking around me I thought it might be a good idea to let somebody know exactly where we were, just in case we sunk too. My radio has DSC and is interfaced to the GPS. I called USCG Tybee and told them our situation and intentions, and set up a 10 minute radio safety check with them. They couldn't believe I was out there in a 18' open boat, they were more concerned about us than I was.

As luck would have it, there was a outgoing tide when we finally made the sound, and I only thought the ocean was rough. Dangit man! I was sure glad we were in a boat that I built myself! We never saw a buoy or channel mark coming in the sound or heading up the Beaufort River, between the waves and spray and rain I couldn't see further than the chart plotter. We took a real beating that night. God bless the CG, they kept up with us by radio every 10 minutes, all the way in to Beaufort Municipal Marina. It was a long, wet night, but we had no damage except a few minor stress cracks. I never thought we were going to lose it, but don't ever want to repeat it either!! Sea trials complete, it passed, we're good

Thanks for the input fellas. I decided to call it dinner time and figured I would keep the crew safe for next trip. I'm not snubbing my nose up at all. I appreciate all knowledgable info that was given and took it into consideration. That's why I ended up not going. I heard things from being stupid to try it and others say go for it and make the decision based on the ride. Everyone has the own opinion on it. That's why I asked.

Ya'll have to be kidding at this point right? Why would you come on here and ask for opinions, have everyone tell you you're crazy, and then snub your nose and do it anyway. I remember doing that when I was 15.

A 4' wave at 7 seconds with a 24knot gust is not a swell, that is a (**() storm in a 18' boat. I would reconsider my earlier post about going in a 35 Bertram in 24 knot gusts.

There is no way I would take my boat out there. Way to early and water is to cold.

They are right. Remember, it is just a prediction, not a guarantee. So, if the winds are 5 knots faster, or the waves 1 foot higher, it can be a real mess. When the forecast is on the edge like this, I need a good reason to even put the boat in and take a look, and I have a 22' boat. With this forecast, I'd find something land based to do.

4ft at 7 sec in a 18ft boat is not my idea of fun. I am one to take risks to go get the fish, but no fish is worth your life. Save your gas for another day when the weather looks better.
