Bellamy out for 2012

It should be surprising, but it's not for anyone who had even a basic understanding of Mike Bellamy's troubled existence.

To most people who follow Clemson closely, the initial reaction upon hearing last night's news was more sadness than shock. Because if you know how much help he was given here, how hard a lot of good people worked to try to fix what might be unfixable, you shudder to think what might become of Bellamy from this point forward without all those resources.

The gifts Bellamy possessed on a football field were inversely proportional to the glaring and almost tragic lack of foundation off it.

Think of past Clemson athletes who have come from difficult circumstances - Anthony Waters? Duane Coleman? - and people who know Bellamy's story will tell you none other has come close to this one.

You hear bits and pieces of stories about him going through stuff as a child that no one should go through. You consider exploring some of this stuff but then back off, respecting the guy's wishes not to dredge up some of the awful details.

Back in the fall of 2010, when Dabo Swinney was telling irate fans to be patient in the midst of a losing season, he said a few times that help was on the way. He was referring to Sammy Watkins. He was also referring to Mike Bellamy. A slumbering offense was going to get better in a hurry.

Watkins blossomed more quickly than everyone imagined, becoming a virtual superstar from his first series as a freshman. He dazzled the college football world during the Tigers' 8-0 start, when fans and just about everyone in these parts thought anything was possible.

Bellamy's progress wasn't nearly as accelerated, largely because he couldn't remember the plays or hold onto the ball. But he showed some flashes, most notably with that nasty juke on the touchdown run at Virginia Tech. From this vantage point, the kid was Reggie Bush-talented. Talented enough to, eventually, make the same sort of splash Watkins did.

If you didn't know Bellamy was going to be high-maintenance when he signed with Clemson, then you did in the summer of 2011 when he flashed that wad of bills for all the social-media world to see.

As the season progressed, you could sense Chad Morris' frustration with his inability to grasp even the simplest concepts on the field. When it's college football and your quarterback is compelled to stop what he's doing right before the snap to get the running back lined up right, it's a problem.

A bigger problem came the night before Clemson won its first ACC championship in 20 years. Bellamy did something really stupid at the team hotel and was suspended for that game and the Orange Bowl.

From that point forward, you knew Bellamy was getting close to his last strike. And you never sensed abundant confidence that he was going to avoid another whiff.

Bellamy wasn't made available for media interviews during spring practice, and you sensed it was because Clemson didn't want to perpetuate stories about Bellamy making some rapid transformation when such a transformation wasn't taking place. He had a long, long way to go for this to become one of those feel-good stories.

A snippet of information came last week that indicated all was not well with this story. He'd slipped so badly academically that one person observed: "If he's wearing a Clemson uniform this fall I'll be surprised."

Tuesday's release from Clemson seemed to leave the door open for a possible return to the Tigers post-2012. Surely there are some optimists who will cling to that hope of Bellamy returning and becoming a star.

But the people who know the Bellamy story best are not preoccupied with him wearing orange again or putting up mind-boggling numbers commensurate with his mind-boggling talent.

Forget stardom. Let's just hope the kid survives.

Then, on December 13/14 when he was suspended by the AD for a violation of team rules, you found out that his work ethic and maturity level were lacking from day one. And then and only then, did you throw him under the bus. Thank you for clearing that up.

Did the university of clemson AD lie about his suspension? How did his work ethic and attitude change so drastically between October and December 13?

I and every other Clemson fan liked his atheletic ability early in the season, the kid has/had a wealth of talent. That is what we saw initially. No one knew until later in the season that his behavior had been an issue since DAY ONE, hence the comment. It wasn't until later that we learned that his work ethic and maturity level were lacking.
