Another closure is upon us. Speckled trout is closed for the month of February in Northeast Florida. It has now become "what can I keep?" when I go fishing not, "what can I catch?"
The list of what a fisherman can't keep is ever growing.
Backcountry fishing remains excellent with redfish cruising our banks, around structures and oyster bars. Live or dead shrimp anglers had exceptional luck last week.
A quarter-ounce jig rigged with your favorite plastic or shrimp is an awesome technique. Anglers floating a live shrimp will have exceptional luck with speckled trout, redfish or sheepshead.
I fished this past weekend with three clients at the south jetty. Two were fishing with fiddlers tight to the rocks, and the other was floating with live shrimp. The angler floating the live shrimp caught most of the fish.
This past weekend's fishing was as good as fishing can get. Great reports came in, and the weather was perfect.
Offshore fishing remains excellent with sea bass, snapper and grouper at the inshore reefs. Further offshore the wahoo and tuna bite continues for big game trollers, though the bite has slowed a bit from the previous few weeks.
The water temperature has dropped from the previous few weeks at the ledge although things should improve through the next few weeks.
Anglers fishing the drops at Nassau Sound and the Nassau River are reporting whiting, whiting everywhere. Many boaters are reporting catches up to 50 whiting per trip.
The surf at Amelia Island State Park is producing whiting and puppy drum. George Crady Bridge State Fishing Pier anglers are catching whiting, sheepshead, puppy drum, reds and trout.
Dead shrimp and fiddler crabs have been the go-to baits for whiting and sheepshead.
Fort Clinch fishing pier anglers are catching whiting, reds, sheepshead and puppy drum at higher levels of tide.
Surf anglers are still reporting slow action, though conditions will improve as our water temperature rises.
