Any Boykin from a reputable kennel is gonna be expensive. Most breeders will only sell you a female on the promise of having the dog spayed and then you have to show proof of the procedure to get the ownership papers. I currently have two boykins and had the pleasure of owning another. They are fine companions. (one of mine is a female) Check with JustDucky kennels, Pam is the ladies first name, She has some really good stock. pam@boykinspaniel.com |

Thanks guys! and yes i know boykins are very expensive but i can find one for 4 or 5 instead of 800 or 9 thats alot better. And i dont really want one from an established hunting dog breeder. Just a family with a litter of pups or something along those lines.

I think I agree. Just buy one from anyone as long as he's got the right personality. I don't think they need to be 5th generation hunting dogs to be good at it. A friend and I went shooting rails for something to do and we brought his boykin to retrieve, and it had never been hunting before, and we knew very little about training it. I'm very inexperienced in hunting and especially getting the dog to retrieve the birds, but it's like he knew what to do immediately. With the right training and commands (which again I know nothing about) it's going to be a great hunting dog. It definitely wasn't professional looking but by the second day he was bringing back every bird. Those freakin dogs are awesome and obviously just waiting to jump in and grab a bird. I shot some video of the days we went, check it out it's pretty entertaining( at least the parts with the dog). Good luck and enjoy the boykin, like i said great dogs.

Dear Yak....The Boykin Spaniel is a relatively new breed and it has several genetic shortcommings as a result of loose breeding practices. Hip Dysplasia, Heart Valve Deformaties, Cataracts, and skin alergies are very common in this breed of dog. The obvious way to avoid these tragic genetic problems is to buy from a qualified breeder, and yes pay the price for a quality animal with a contract guarantee. Consider the overall cost of ownership when purchasing a dog, be responsible, and do your homework...don't get in a hurry, take your time....a dog will be your responsibility for 10 years or more. In my opinion buying a Boykin for a pet is like buying a corvette for a family car...it'll work, but what a waste of potential. I've owned and trained Boykin's for 30 years...Bull Island Beau was the 1982 Open Class National Champion...1st Place Land, and 1st Place Water. My current Boykin is the best Dove Dog I've ever owned, and he's the handsomest 55 lb. block headed Boykin you'll ever see...it took me 2 years to get him and $2000. You get what you pay for.

i am also looking at a chesapeake bay retriever. a lady in west columbia breeds them and she has a litter that will be available in about a month. does anybody own a chessie and can tell me the pros and cons? i am looking at a chessie for the same reason as a boykin.

Yak, You're going from apples to oranges between the two breeds mentioned. If you're looking for a family dog and a hunting companion that can sleep on the bed with you then stick with the Boykin. I've never owned a Chessie but have hunted over them a few times and from how the owners described the Chessie it was a contest as to who was the boss with them. Supposedly they're very strong willed. I've had several Labs, a Brittany, and a Boykin and so far I've been absolutely won over by the little curly dog. Good luck with your search but please think long and hard about what you are looking for in your dog and do your homework on each breed. |

does anybody have any dealings with cedar creek boykins? they breed labs and boykins. they have a litter that a friend bred that they are selling and using for their place becuase their friends just got 2 boykins that bred. would you guys pay 700.00 for this? even if we got a 48hr guarantee and had our vet, the folly road animal hospital check it out before we paid full price? my dad pretty much has his heart set on a boykin he doesnt wanna 'settle' for a chessie. i would just want your boykin owners opinion for this puppy. i mean we really want one but wont pay over 8 hungie nobody needs a 1200 dollar dog if you can get from a breeder for 8.

| Ask to see both the parents if possible. See what their disposition is. $700.00 is not a bad price these days. I'm sorry but I'm not familiar with Cedar Creek so I can't help there. |

if they wont let me or cant let me or dont have the parents and i dont see them is still a good dog? would you still buy one? im hoping to get one from a breeder and thats the cheapest i found one, wont be buying one not from a breeder. my cousin was telling me that his buddy bought a boykin from somebody to use solely for hunting, and it was gun shy.

I have a Cedar Creek black lab...they were very helpful and their home/dog kennels are top-notch.

| From the looks of the website they look very professional. One thing I liked was the fact that the Boykin pups are BSS registered not AKC. As long as you're getting the hip/eye guarantee I'd say go for it. |

Yak, Check out the latest issue of South Carolina Wildlife. There's a Boykin on the cover and a nice article on them. |

As i live in Boykin, I was disappointed that the article offered no history on the Boykin Spaniel. ie that it was first bred in boykin, sc, who first bred them etc. etc. The artcle was great but it should have been more informative with history, how they came about etc. etc.

Have a buddy looking at a litter up here in Tennessee, from the Boykins themselves, whose great grandfather or maybe farther started the breed. They moved to TN and still are raising litters and selling them. Got the history from Mrs. Boykin last week when buddy was picking out a pup. Pretty cool how the breed was started. good luck
