Went and got the boat with the trailer my 21 was on, found a trailer a buddy needed to sell, then went and swapped the boats out at the ramp.
Hydraulic steering cylinder on the Evinrude's locked up. Unbolted from motor so motor could turn. Hooked a jumpbox up to the boat's battery cables, and all lights, pumps and the motor trim and tilt work. Wow!
All of that will get removed though. I think the only things I'll leave on the boat are the compass, steering wheel and lifting eyes!
Let some mystery oil soak in the evinrude for a few days in case it was locked up, but I went to it and could turn the flywheel by hand. Jumped the starter solenoid, and the motor's got good compression readings. May get a set of plugs and see if she will fire off. If so, I will be able to sell it as a running motor instead of a midsection and powerhead at least.
Thought about keeping it to push the boat, but I think it's too little HP.
Anyways, some friends of mine will help me with bottom paint removal this weekend hopefully, and I'll have an idea of what, if anything needs to be repaired on the running surface. Hope it won't be much!
Talking with a guy who does boat restoration in town to help me out with a lot of this work and have the boat running by summer or early fall. I think he'll do good work, and I'll do what I have time to help with.
I will post updates.
Enjoy.

Is it just the pictures or is the center console really short? the steering wheel looks really low to deck. Are you going to keep the console? I cant wait to see how it turns out!

Boat will be modernized and rigged with the best stuff I can get. Probably putting an ox66 on until the f300 v6's on the used market get cheap.
No loans.
No crazy taxes or insurance.
No depreciation.
And lots of mojo.

This is a great project boat, these old Mako's are real battle wagons in the ocean. You are going to like the way this boat rides in the ocean. Phin if you haven't already check out som e of the projects that were done on the Clasic Mako Site, lot of info on there about rebuilding these old Mako's. Can't wait to see this project unfold Tony

I look at that project and can see the potential she has. Looks like a lot of fun.
Was she named "Mojo" already? |

Mojo's what I'll call her, and what I want her to have.
No idea of name before.

Did someone bury it? That is a lot of dirt in the fish boxes and sump?
Good luck. Looks like you have a hell of a project. When are you trying to have it ready by? |

| Love that hull! Had one lined up to buy last year but couldn't get the title worked out. Who have you been consulting with here in town? I have an old anacapri that I'm wanting to restore but I really need someone to look at it with me to point me in the right direction. |

A little time with a Shop-vac, pressure washer and a scrub brush and the starting point won't look so bad. She's got mojo...you can see it in her lines.

Looks like a good project boat. Hope you got a good deal on her. First and most important part has tested and passed, it floats.

Love that running surface. Do you plan on keeping/rehab the current console or build a new one? What is the fuel capacity and is there any room to increase that?

knotforsail, will send you a PM
New console going in with some unique stuff as far as Mako restores go.
Hull colors will be a surprise.

Spent two and a half days on bottom paint with S4G's and the Clarendon crew's help along with my cousin coming and working all Saturday also. I think one more solid day of work will have the remaining epoxy barrier coat and stubborn areas clean.
3 rounds of treatment and power washing:

Forgot to add-
We learned that lower temps really hurt the bottom cleaning. It was 27-30 degrees overnight this past weekend, and I think if it'd been warmer the paint would have come off better. Also, direct sunlight is bad. Treatment dries up too fast and cannot get as deep into the paint. All this adds up to more applications and cleanings... more work.

That's a great restoration project, Phin. I love those older Mako hulls.

knotforsail, I do that kind of work if you can't find someone local. I'm about 2 hours from Charleston, but don't mind a drive. I need to check out Haddrells anyway. It's a great idea to get some professional guidance, preferably before you buy. It's funny, but at least once a week someone calls me and says "I bought this old boat and want to see what it will take to fix it." In most cases, they should have called me before they bought it

In the interest of safety, I suggest blocking the boat better if you are working underneath it.
Ideally get a set of poppit stands for the rear and chain together. the front can use cribbing with block, but you need to have a top block the spans across the cribbing tranversely. With the small block you have now, if the boat shifts even just a few inches side to side it is going to drop. Same goes for the rear cribbing. The small blocks do not allow any margin for shifting if it were to occur.

Since you're gutting and refitting the inside, would it not be easier to flip the rig over so you can do all of the hull work more easily? Perhaps fashion a temp wood jig or cradle? Never restored one myself but just thought i might would try that if i was attempting this project. Seems like it would ware you out trying to get at the bottom upside down.

Doing the best I can with what I've got. I'm no expert by any means. I appreciate the good ideas. Can definitely use all I can get.
Someone asked about fuel. Boat has two original tanks. A 65-85 and a 35 I estimate. I will go back with 120-160 gallons. Prefer one tank, but weight distribution and console changes I'm making may require two or either something very custom, which would mean expensive, I.e. not my preference.
