wasn't sure where else to put this- hoping folks like saltydog and USMCsilver will stop in and offer some advice.
i've been driving myself nuts thinking about selling off some guns and building a suppressed 10/22. if i had all the money i wanted, i'd get an integrally-suppressed barrel (http://suppressorsource.com/archives/19), but i also have a markIII that i'd like to get threaded in order to switch a can back and forth.
- anyone in Charleston county gone through the Class 3/Form 4 process?
- advice on local class 3 FFLs- price/quality of service?
- who to deal with for the signature on the form?
- anyone have input on brands of suppressor? i'm currently wanting a thompson machine zephyr (or zephyr xl) because they can be disassembled and cleaned by the user, reviews make it sound quiet.
i'm planning to be purely subsonic, of course, with a normal 1:16 twist. it's not for practical purposes- i'm just a 30yr old kid when i think about how cool it would be to hear nothing but the action cycling (next project would be a single-shot bolt for super stealth).
thanks in advance for input |

Other than the price of the suppressor and gun work, what is the final cost of getting a suppressed gun? What does a class III FFL holder charge and what other fees are involved?
I love the integrally suppressed 10/22 in the link above. |

thanks salty, i'll give him a call. nice pix of your hunting trip in the other forum!
roach, ideally i want to take a stock 10/22 and add the following:
-aftermarket synthetic stock -lever action mag release -16.5" TacSol bull barrel -oversize bolt handle -polymer bolt buffer pin -factory 25 shot mag -sight rail -red dot -volquartsen trigger kit
probably won't replace the upper... in all honesty, the aforementioned will take me years to be able to afford to put together... but the suppressors i'm looking at are around $300, and the tax stamp costs $200 for the right to own it. not sure what a class III would charge for handling the paperwork and delivery of the can, but that puts the finished product easily at $1,200
you may have noticed that you can buy the integrally-suppressed complete version of the thompson machine operative barrel for a little over $800, which leaves only the $200 stamp and application process.

Look up Innovative Arms.com. They are in Elgin SC. His rimfire can is very quiet and breaks down very easy for cleaning. He also makes a stainless steel version that will handle 22lr,22wm,17hmr, and fn 5.7. You give up a little weight going from Aluminum to stainless but gain a whole new range of possible host weapons.
I went with a can instead of integral because host weapons are super easy to find, and you are not tied down to one.
I switch between 10/22, Sig mosquito, Savage MKII TR, and dads m&p 1522.
I also have a .30 cal can that can be shot on AR's with a little handy adapter.

Barbawang,
I run both a 10/22 and Mark II suppressed. I put TacSol barrels on both of them and run an AAC Prodigy suppressor.
I used Ken Carson in Santee for my FFL (219 Happy Trail RD, Santee, SC, 803-496-5761). He's great and charges $75, but that's a long ride. Henry Bryant is in Summerville and is a fantastic guy. He's a bit more active than Ken, dealing in lots of different stuff. He's incredibly professional. Next NFA item I buy will go through him. Again, nothing against Ken at all, just a much closer drive to Summerville, and Henry is much more well-read on all the newest cool stuff. I've bought about 10 guns through his FFL. He charges $75 for Class 3 transfers and only $15(!!!) for FFL services (if you buy a gun through Gunbroker, for example).

You don't need anything else beyond the threaded barrels to have a couple of nice guns that shoot with the same interchangeable suppressor. But I did add a nice synthetic stock to my 10/22, later adding a couple cool upgrades.
The Prodigy is one of the quietest suppressors out there and can be disassembled for cleaning. Go to SilencerTalk.com and check out the latest skinny in the new cans. Many of the newer ones are queit and can be disassembled. By from a reputable dealer, or even just some guy on Gunbroker that has lots and lots of positive feedback (which I did).

Forgot to mention that I used a trust for this. It was easy as pie. I bought Willmaker for $19 and made my own trust. Cool thing about the trust is that my wife can be a beneficiary and have control of my Class 3 items, plus no LE signature required. Once the trust is in place, adding any Class 3 items is as easy as updating the "Schedule" page (which shows ownership). Send off the paperwork and wait 2 - 6 months, depending on demand at BATFE. And then shoot it till it falls off!

That's good info to know. thanks.
that 10/22 would be a squirrels nightmare!
Wish I still had my Mark II. I'm trying to see if I can retro fit my Mark III with Mark II sights. I also miss the 15 shot mags.
The Mark II is by far the most accurate I've ever been with any pistol in any caliber in the 10-20 yard range.

thanks high life, i have looked at innovative arms before. no plans to shoot any mags, and also want to minimize weight as much as possible- the aluminum "apex" looks nice.
JimIsle, perfect info on the trust, FFLs, etc- thank you! that 10/22 is almost exactly what i'd like- is that a harris bipod? do you remember who made the stock?
ok, one more- do you ever get a ballistic crack from the rifle with normal LR ammo? i love the fact that many integral barrels these days bleed pressure off high velocity rounds to render them subsonic, but don't do enough shooting to justify a dedicated barrel- i'd sooner invest in decent subsonic ammo instead.
i bought a mark III new and wish i had a II as well... mine is the long SS bull barrel too, so it's already pretty heavy in the front. i would need to replace with a lighter and shorter barrel to accept the can. that will come after i've got a quiet little rabbit assassin gun like JI.
i am tempted to get my marlin 60 threaded because it could be a host as well... can anybody weigh in on approximate costs for the work?
thanks again for all the good advice, y'all |

JimIslander you don't need a camera to catch the (**() thieves on your place, just get night vision and take em out with that thief killer you have! LOL.
