I' ve been seeing some puffs on the bottom and some small plume echos spiking up, a few of them good size. Wonder if they're shrimp, or bait? So small it's hard to get the net on them. So, what do shrimp look like on your sonar? thanks, NaClH20

A bunch of little curved lines just above bottom. Do a search - Phin had some nice pics of it a while back in this section.

I could be mistaken but I believe different brands and models could show shrimp on the bottom differently. My Eagle depth finder shows spikes, like the sky line of Charlotte or some other larger city. Because it is a cheap unit it shows shrimp or baitfish on the bottom as the same. Fish other than on the bottom show up as an arch or the fish icon symbol. My last fishfinder showed shrimp and bottom baitfish as a bush. Neither unit was real good. I got false imagines off both at lot. I would pass over a hole and the unit showed the mother load below. I would turn around and pass over the exact same hole and --- nothing.
Can anybody recommend a good inexpensive finder? You know, something that shows what is below without having to make sure fifty settings are all correct. You know - fishfinder for dummies??? Thanks,

If you have a SHIFT setting; that helps. In 30' of water, I will set the range to 15', then put in 20 feet of shift, and I get display with the detail of the 15 ft setting, much more detail than the 30 ft setting.

BaitShrimper, you may have a bottom-lock feature - - try that.

They will be detected on a depth recorder, otherwise there would be no such thing as deep hole shrimping!

| 15 year deep hole shrimper here. started off with the cheapos and now have a nice fish finder. they will all show the shrimp with the correct settings. Gain/ sensitivity settings usually help the most. If it looks like offshore bottom fishing on a wreck, your probably on shrimp. Locating them has a lot more to do with the time of year and tide. They will not always show up. I have caught the mother load with just a little showing on the depth finder. And also with them showing 10 feet high off the bottom in 20 - 60ft. Just remember shrimp are bottom dwellers, they show from the bottom up. not anywhere else. If the marks are off the bottom they are most likely fish. |
