so i am getting a jon boat put together and i would like to fish freshwater also. my buddy and i are interested in it and want to learn how to catch bass, and catfish, eventually stripers but thats a different story. so i live on james island and i was wondering what the closest area that has good fishing to me? i dont know a thing about freshwater but i am a saltwater guy. what lures do you use? i am a live bait kinda guy myself but am not completely inept at artificials, but only soft plastics not spinners or spoons or chatter baits. do you fish light tackle or medium or heavy? and define light tackle because they might be different from fresh to salt. and what lures and things are good on largemouth? what kind of structure do you fish for them, like i normally fish marshgrass lines oyster points and docks. are docks good on freshwater or do you fish deep structure of trees or submerged grass? what is a good depth i know that probably sounds dumb but like do you fish shallow like 2' or 3' or less? or do fish in 5 or 6 feet or deep like 15- 25' or deeper? what kind of bottoms are out their in the lakes that are good? if their is dams and stuff is fishing pointless when the ''tide'' is running? since i live so far away i would really only be able to fish in the summer or possibly weekends. also in the summer me and my buddy smitty are thinking about camping out on the lake or canal or river and fishing for days at a time so we have alot of time to learn new techniques and get picked up a few days later. what are good landings to put in at and do any of you guys know a spot sorta clost to camp out on for a few days in the summer? thank all you guys

We would troll around the lake edges, fishing around lily pads, grass, and submerged limbs. There is a place called the Hatchery off Hwy 6, that is a part of Lake Moultrie, which has some good bass fishing.

I've caught bass at Santee literally at the water's edge, and I've caught them out in the middle of the lake...there's no hard and fast rule on how far offshore to fish. Asd for water depth in Spring, it depends if you want to fish pre-spawn, spawn, or postspawn fish.

There's no absolutes..I've caught them bedding in water March and April so shallow their dorsal fins were almost sticking out of the water, and I've caught them June and July spawning in stumps 8' deep.

If you have a small boat, the big thing with Santee is that the winds can get up quickly, making it look like the North Sea. The Hatchery is a good are to start learning. If it's really windy you can stay in the Hatchery Canal, if not you can go into the stumpfield or outside of the Hatchery itself. Whatever you do, don't just start driving around wide open without knowing where you are...there's millions of stumps in some areas that are just under the surface.

If you want to troll, either troll the rock dike outside either side of the Hatchery, from Atkins to Short Stay, or from Overton to Bonneau. You can catch bass and cats, particularly channel cats, fishing crankbaits along those rocks.

I don't know how to save the screenshot on Google Earth or Bing, but look at either one at the lower right section of Moultrie. You'll see Pinopolis Point jutting out into the lake. Look to the left, and you'll see Hwy 6. Follow that, and to the left of Pinopolis you'll see a big octagonal shaped area that's defined by a dike wall. That area inside is the Hatchery. It's a large, shallow, stumpy area with scatttered grass and lily pads. You can go through breaches in the old dike wall into Moultrie.

Whatever you do, don't just put your boat on plane and go zooming around, there are stumps just under the surface all through that area. If you don't know whaere you're going, you'll lose a prop or a lower unit before you can blink your eyes.

If you turn onto Hwy 6 heading towards Cross from Moncks Corner - the Hatchery is on the right side of the road...there is a sign next to the entrance.

The Goose Creek Reservoir also has bass - I like to fish there for crappie and bream too. I have fished both places for many years.

get yourself a couple of bass magazines. you can learn alot. Then just get out there and throw--you really cant go wrong -- bass will hit anything that moves this time of year. Youll figure the rest out as you go.

Speaking of the Hatchery, I heard that there has been some trouble in the parking lot (ie. damage to vehicles and trailers). Is it safe to put in there and fish. I will be down next week and would like to fish the Hatchery but don't want to take the chance of something happening. Thanks

Don't know where you heard what you heard, but I haven't heard of any significant problem, though from time to time, there is a break-in/vandalism at just about any public ramp. Often the 'word' starts on a little bit of fact and gets perpetuated by word of mouth for years. Sometimes stuff gets started by folks that don't share well with others, if you get my drift.

Bottomline, I would park my car or truck there in the spring without worrying.

Fished from the bank in the Goose Creek Reservoir yesterday and caught a bunch of small bream (15 or so). I could not get any bass to strike from the bank but the bream bite has increased significantly since last week there. I talked to a bunch of guys that had been out in boats and they said that the bass fishing was pretty slow and nobody I talked to had caught more than 2. Some guys brought in about 25 nice sized bream and shellcrackers. The ones caught near the bank, except one, were pretty small but fun on the light tackle I was using.
