Sold my 20' Triumph boat today. Wanting to go skinny. I am kind of enamored with Carolina Skiffs.
Goals of next boat are 1) skinny water and 2) low maintenance. Going to buy a 17'.
Any comments, good or bad, on Carolina Skiffs would be welcome.

Are you looking at the 17' DLV or DLX (jon boat style)?
If you are thinking about the DLX, I would definately go with the 8' beam. Although, I would guess the one with the 6' beam would probably be easier to push with a pole if you are looking to do that. The 17' DLV is only made with an 8' beam.
The DLX will draft a little less than the DLV, but the ride can be a bit aggrivating in choppy water. The DLX model though, will also have about as much room to move around and/or store stuff as you will find in a 17' boat.
The DLV will do better in a chop and they are also finished off a bit nicer. I've always considered the DLX pretty much just a no frills "utility" kind of boat.
They are very open and really easy to work on to set up your electronics, rod holders etc...like you want.
It doesn't take much HP to push them and they are great on gas too.
I have the 19' model DLX with the 8' beam and love it.

DLV at the moment, but I am a no frills kind of guy. Seems like the DLV would cut the water a bit better than yours. My Triumph was sooooooooo easy to maintain that I really don't want to have to mess with too much stuff. Float, fish, pressure wash, repeat.
Thanks for taking the time to share the info. That helps a good bit. Has the Suzuki behaved? I'm assuming FS is four stroke. I might be misguided, but I don't feel the difference between brands is as extreme on a 4S versus a 2S.

Seel's has a 2000 198 V Series w/ a Yamaha C90. I almost bought it and should have but went w/ a BX 22 Pro. Go get it. Talk to Al.

J14 for 3 yrs. Bulletproof so far. Abused pretty good. Ez to clean and maintain.
Look at the bulls bay skiff too. Imo.
Simple has been good for me. I had a larger faster boat and it took a lot more maintenance |

i will let you know my buddys got a jvx 18 and you feel it in your spine, it gets pretty skinny but man its doug and you wet often because the flat bottom slams down in btw waves ,sprays over the front. Other than that nice and wide, plenty room for accessories with wide gunnel rails to walk down. good balance. just my 2cents

i would look at sundance or bulls bay or pioneer. or you could go with a complete flats boat but if you wanna do some river and family fishing aand such gets a flats boat that drafts like 7''. and if you get a carolina skiff you can customize it anyway you want so dont worry about no platform and such

| Wow, no more Triumph! Like Yakman said, I would at least look at Sundances. I don't know anything about them but they look really nice and are no frills, low maintenance type boats. |

I will soon (a week or less) take possession of my brand new 21 foot Carolina Skiff DLV. These boats will go skinny PLUS have the room I need for five grandchildren. We test-drove a demo just loie ours and we are impressed with ride, speed, and on-plane time. I will post pictures and give a better report once we have taken it out for a whole day. we still own a 17" Scout CC 2000 model and will keep it as the family's second boat as there is nothing wrong with it.quote:

| The Sundance boats have a hull design that throws the water down and out to the side. I had a B22 and loved it. Simple design, easy to maintain and a family owned business. |

| Cant beat the Carolina skiff have had one since 91 (J16) has been all over fresh and salt! have run 9.9,25, 50 hp and all run well even lost it off tra. at 60 mph and all it did was scrach the bottom a bit never flenched just put it in and went fishing! wouldnot trade it for a new one!! |

If I can sell my 215CC Triumph, I'm looking at doing exactly what you're doing. I love the easy clean up and almost indestructible hull on my boat. I've been looking at the Carolina Skiffs and Sundance Boats but also have been thinking about the Triumph 17 Skiff? Have you looked at one? I'm thinking that just might be the ticket.

I looked at them on line.  Can't afford a new one. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE TRIUMPHS! Unfortunately I bought mine before I got heavy into fishing, and it didn't suit the needs of what I've come to enjoy as an angler. Expect a fair amount of hesitance, mainly out of ignorance of what a Triumph boat is and the benefits you get from one.
If you need a testimonial for someone, let me know. With closures as they are, someone who likes offshore and inshore fishing both would benefit greatly from a 215CC.
