so i have never surf fished breach inlet ever. i dont do too much surf fishing but i am buyin gear and will do it alot more this summer. but for now my dad are are thinking of surf fishing breach inlet in march and april. i wanna try to catch some trout from the surf and whiting, and have a rod out for sharks or skates or reds if they might be their. so will breach inlet hold trout and whiting this time of year? what do you fish for them with? do you fish the breakers or outside the breakers or doyou just cast into the middle of the inlet itself? where would the sharks and reds be hiding at? will any sharks be their, can i cathc dogfish out their? also am thinking about captain sams inlet and folly beach groins and for the same species and same questions? thanks

caugt a nice sharpnose last summer around the IOP corner on the beach. i would walk towards the beach away from the inlet. there is a ton of sandbars and such on the IOP side.

ive always had better luck at folly honestly though. live near sullivans now so i am going to figure that area out if anyone has any advice?

i like and just never have luck in the surf so im looking to try out new spots, hint hint anybody. and also i am getting a surf setup and the price of the combo is worth it just for the rod. so when that reel craps out is a baitrunner reel better for surf or a normal spinning outfit?

Yak,
I think the James Island County Park is putting on a seminar in the near future, may not be your style, but may be worth checking out. I don't know much about surf fishing either so was thinking about taking my 5 year old to get her stoked and me learn-ed. You may get better advice from a Hadrell's or C.A. sponsored event, but this one takes place on Folly beach so I figure they will show you what to look for in the surf (i.e. rips). I have looked for the link but cannot find one so if anyone out there knows when/where and how to sign up please post.

I live in Mt Pleasant and started surf fishing two years ago. I have heard Folly is good for reds and sharks based on reports I see, but because I live in MT P, I never drive over there. Last summer I had a lot of luck on the IOP side of Breach Inlet, in the surf, not in the inlet. Blues, Reds, whiting, sharks, etc. Irene came through in late August and changed all the sandbars, and the only thing I caught after Irene was an 18" flounder in October - wierd. I never had much luck in the inlet, but lots of folks fish there. I have heard the rock jettys on the Sullivans side, and Stations 30-32 can have trout, especially first thing in the morning. I caught lots of whiting in the breakers on IOP side in May last year. Double drop hook, 2-3oz pyramid, piece of shrimp for bait. I prefer around sunrise on a outgoing tide just after high tide. Fishing should pick up when the water temp hits 65-70 degrees, its about 60 right now.

Also, the beach behind Ft Moultrie on Sullivans is pretty good. Park on Station 12 or Palmetto street and fish the jettys or surf. I have caught black sea bass, blues, flounder - and seen trout and reds caught here also.

I prefer to fish Folly at high tide because the washed out holes on the lee sides of the groins are 5-6 feet deep. You should try to get as close to the rocks as possible. If you get hung up you can come back at dead low tide and get your rig back.:)

Yakman I love to fish folly, Sullivan's island, and breach inlet. I always have a large surf rod out with a fish finder(make sure to use a 4oz.+ weight at breach the current is amazing many have died due to it so don't go to deep in.)and a 4/0 or 5/0 hook. Bring a cast net. There are foot long mullet just waiting to be cast netted. At breach go under the bridge by the boathouse and cast toward the docks but don't cast the way of the metal walkway over head lost a $50 cast net to some oyster shells last year. I've had a couple shark runs a breach on chunks of cut mullet but haven't caught a big one yet. Have a rod with fresh dead cut shrimp on a double drop rig for whiting. Have a rod for casting some lures, jigs, ect. If you decide to go to Sullivan's I like to fish by the fort (this place is referred to as the grillage) I swear one day someone's gonna pull a 7 or 8 footer out of there someday(that person will be me haha). I see a lot of people catching flounder on a Carolina rig with mud minnows. Folly is best for reds, flounder, and whiting just use the same methods. In my opinion folly is the best beach to fish. At the end of folly with the light house fish by the rocks you can catch a lot of crab by the rocks so bring a hand held net because they are excellent red fish bait. Bring a cast net to. Every couple seconds you'll see 4-5 finger mullet zoom past you and once again this is excellent red fish bait.Bring a conventional reel to last time when I went there in the summer i saw a 9ft. bull shark boy I'll tell you i did not want to go in the water after that haha! Surf fishing is the hardest type of fishing there is. Any body can use a fish finder and drop a piece of bait on the fishes head but its the surf fishermen who aren't afraid to go get dirty who go out every weekend facing trial and error trying to figure out the best spots and catch some fish. Whatever you do don't quit surf fishing is hard but that's what makes it even better in long run knowing you caught that 40+ red through hard work and dedication. Good luck fishing and tight lines yakman.
