Planning to pruchase an EPIRB & was hoping I could get some advice from some of y'all please.
Don't want to cut any corners here. Don't want to go with a "Manual Type".
Any thoughts??

| ACR Satellite 3 406 Cat II EPIRB is a good one i guess. never had to use it but its on board. |

DoubleN got the AquaLink PBL 350 from Santa this past XMas. Seems simple enough. Hope I will never be able to how good it works.

I went with " the spot" and love it. On sale they are $100, plus $100 a year service fee. But you not only get erpib service but I can also send texts anywhere and have my home track my current position on the web throughtout the trip.
That sunk cruise ship's home office could have used this!
You might want to check it out. The fee seems bad, but the cost of replacement batteries in the epirb is equal cost. I am ditching my epirbs as the batteries go. |

I have a 406 epirb with a dead battery. I would be willing to trade for boat/fishing equipment.

PLB's aren't a replacement for an EPIRB. It's a good suppleement, but go ahead and invest in a good GPS-enabled EPRIB. Both ACR and McMurdo make good units.

SPOT has its place (and weaknesses), but is not a replacement for an EPIRB. In an emergency, there is no replacement for 406 MHz.
When you purchase your EPIRB, try to get one that is GPS enabled. GPS enabled EPIRB's drastically reduce the amount of time it takes for the Coast Guard to pin down your position.
Automatic or manual activation is up to you. Most recreational boats will capsize before sinking, which could lead to the EPIRB being trapped in the vessel before it reaches its release depth.
PLB's are ideal for those who either boat alone or with others who are not experienced enough to effectively operate a boat in order to get you out of the water should you fall overboard.
