Software update? Did you unplug the phone from your computer while it was updating or something?

I'm not one of those types that have to be plugged in at all times, but if they told me I would be without my phone for a day, I would go in there and demand my money back.

True, but I believe you still can do tethered updates through iTunes. I still do all my iOS updates tethered to maintain jailbreak, so I tend to forget they (finally) implemented OTA updating. If he had unplugged during a tethered update or if his battery had died in the middle of an OTA update, the phone could have stopped responding as a result.

How do you check security on your Iphone 4S?

I get a strange beep beep right after I press to dial a number and before it dials. Also same beeps when I press to answer an incoming call. It will beep beep after I press to answer and before allowing me to say anything.

Weird. Any thoughts

Joe,
BB has a stylus from Rocketfish that looks like a ball point pen with a bubble on the end- works like a dream for typing- about $16.
I have used every battery saving trick I have found and am still recharging at least once a day- no music, video, photos, GPS, etc.
Not really a happy camper right now, but still have 10 days to return it all for full credit. EBAY has my old Motorola Tundra Milspec semi water and shockproof flip phone for $60-100 and no contract, since mine was over. Just might go back, at least until the I-5 comes out this fall as rumored.

If the battery life is what's killing you about the 4S, you're not likely to be happy with the 5 once it hits the market. It's still going to be a powerful - and consequently power hungry - smartphone. There's absolutely no getting around that. They'll likely switch to a newer system-on-a-chip with better power handling and efficiency, but they'll also add a bunch of features that will negate all of it (like LTE, additional CPU cores, etc). Couple that with the pressure for thinner and lighter phones, and it's not likely the iPhone 5 will feature a noticeably larger or higher capacity battery.

It sounds like you're comparing the battery life of the iPhone to your old flip phone, and there's just no comparison there. No smartphone will ever match the kind of battery life you could get out of an old flip phone. Those used to smartphones tend to have less of an issue with battery life - they expect to have to charge their phones every day. Those who have never used anything but ancient and basic feature phones are much more at risk for disappointment.
