Going to MB in April and needed some rod holders for surf fishing. Went to Home Depot and picked up some 2" PVC, 2" Cross PVC and some Gorilla Glue. Used hand saw to make cuts and took 2 2' or so pieces of PVC to construct each. Costs roughly $15 each.

Nice set up. Just curious what you plan to do with the cross section? I like to make my own and like to see what others have done.

My guess it is to assist you getting it in and out of the sand.

Rather than carrying a mallet, it's just as opps said, to drive it in the sand. I made them short and hope the gorilla glue holds enough to drive one w/ out them coming lose. I figure when not fishing they'll serve good as an umbrella holder.

So, um, you know the PVC Cement permanently bonds together? Why did you use Gorilla glue?

I was wondering the same thing....the gorilla glue actually may not work as well, but sure it will hold enough for this project

I don't ever do projects past building a ramp for kids so I was not aware of PVC cement. Saw Gorilla Glue when I walked in door so that's what I got. I'll keep that in mind for next PVC project so thanks! If it doesn't hold then I do know what to get now.

Why did it take $15 each? PVC is $6 the connectors normally $2-3. You should be able to make multiple for $15. Just wondering so I decided to put in my $0.02.

The holder is actually what I thought to be Tall. Out of the sand it comes up to about mid stomach and I'm 5'11". The 2" PVC cross joints were $7 each @ home depot and pieces of PVC were $3 each. I used 2 pieces of PVC I'm guessing 2-3' in length. It's definitely tall enough. On the surf rod set-up, it's not a surf set up. I don't have any true surf rods. All my spinning rods are 7' Heavy Ugly Stiks

I have seen a few that surf fish a lot take a single piece of pvc. Drill a hole thru it , insert a metal rod through it and twist it around to go into ground. I just use a piece of 2x4 and a mallet.

I just use a back and forth motion to get mine about 18" in the wet sand at the water's edge.

I'd rather fish than eat.

I thought about that too. Was looking for most solid piece I could make. Extra pieces, mallets and boards makes it tough w/ 3 kids.

I like the fish ruler sticker on holder. Good idea. Mine are all for sport but that was a smart idea. Imma try my best for a shark. Not sure where to start other than try and find biggest mullet at local tackle shop.

I learned this trick several years ago. It sounds crazy, but it is efficient and I do not need tools. I have surf stakes made of 1.5" PVC cut at about 4-4.5 feet long. Push the pointed end into the wet sand and then suck the air out of the top of the tube. As you draw the air out of the stake, it will pull itself into the sand. I sink mine about 1 - 2 feet into the sand. I have had 6 and 7 foot sharks make runs on my rod and the stake does not move. It takes only seconds to put these stakes into the sand. I know it sounds crazy, but I have showed friends this trick and they laugh, then when they try it they are amazed at how well this works.
