We shrimp off Bulls bay every season. Thinking about getting a larger net, I am a girl and can throw well. Does anyone suggest getting a larger net - using 6ft now. Will it be to heavy? Last year was brutal due to choppy waves and thought possibly a larger net?

I'm 13 and I use a 7ft Betts super pro saltwater series net. It's super heavy but I can still open it up a couple feet from the boat. If you shrimp in water over 4 ft deep or chop or current then you need a big and heavy net. We have one for shrimp and one for bait catching
There is no greater fan of fly fishing than the mud minnow. |

Net size is only important if you cannot cover your bait with the net fully open. If you can cover your bait with the net you are throwing, you do not need a larger net. Throwing a larger net will only wear you out faster and takes longer to load for next throw. So if you are getting shrimp with a 6 foot net, stay with it. If not, you are probably n ot on the shrimp or you are doing something wrong to spook the shrimp.
A little back ground:
I started "shrimping" with a castnet before there were laws and regulations for "shrimping over bait". I have never needed more than a 6 foot net to get my shrimp. I find those that use a larger net do so because they scatter their bait over a large area or some other thing that requires a large net to cover their bait. Or they do dumb things like shadowing their bait as they throw, or bang the net in the bottom of the boat. Things that make the shrimp leave tha bait. So a larger net is needed to get shrimp for them. I shrimp in Bulls Bay also. It takes me about 6 passes on my poles on average to fill my cooler. I use an Old Salt 6 foot net made by Betts. It has 1 pound of lead per radius foot of lead. So 6 pounds of lead. It sinks to bottom at rate of 2 feet per second. So it hits bottom in 2 - 3 seconds in 6 feet of water. The larger the net the slower they sink unless you jump the weight up. Example - 8 foot net, 1.5 pound per radius foot, net weights 12 pounds. Double 6 foot net.

| I bought a 12ft bait buster with mesh last year and a friend bought a 10ft I took his with me on one trip b/c it was a few pounds lighter. but carolinagranpa i would have to disagree with you on a few things, but i am fairly new to this so i may be wrong, but personally i like throwing an 8+ net bc of a couple of things, one pure sq footage when i throw the 10 footer i have to stay at least 20-25 feet away from the poles which gives me alot of room to catch shrimp. I dont spook them on the way in we back a good way off to empty and reset and then ease up and make my throw and back out. We limited out in 2 1/2 to 3 passes with 2 boats 3 days in a row, within 200 yrds of each other. The spot we went seems to not be pressured as much as bulls bay where we went opening day and it seemed to work. It works for me and I am hooked on it like crack... i just got my 9 footer in with no mesh in and picked up all my bait binder for the season when i went to iop for vacation. I am ready to roll out.... |

went on line last month approx the 15th. got all of permits and licenses. received my pretty blue tags in the mail last thursday along with my reg. license/hunting/fishing/salt/shrimp/turkey/duck/etc. ready to go.

Renewed my fishing/hunting license and paid for my tags on 6/27. I got my shrimp tags in the mail yesterday. This is by far the absolute earliest i have ever gotten them. Maybe DNR is listening to some suggestions and trying to preempt that rush near the season.
Good on them.
Oh and only 65 days left!!
