I am going to BVI for the first time sailing with the family and thought I would take my spinning rod and try and catch some fish. Can anyone give me some advice on techniques and baits to try? Also am wondering if braid and floro leaders like I use in SC is OK or if the clear water will mandate some other line? By the way I am not gonna troll, just want to try fishing off the stern while at anchor, fishing from dingy or kayak, wading, and surf. Thanks for any advice.

many of the more desolate coves off the drake channel are fun to fish at night by slowly sending some cut bait to the bottom. you can catch a lot of jacks and yellow tails, and give you something to do at night. spots that we have had some consistency are the west anchorage on norman island. one cove to the west from the marina on peter island. jos van dyke right in the same cove as foxys bar.

I went 2 years ago and always had out 2 line trolling. Bought a new cedar plug for the trip and it was demolished after a week of toothy critters. I stayed on the outside of the islands mostly. Caught Mackerals mostly (King, Cero) cudas and one mystery screammer that we lost. You should try it
Since your not trolling though you can catch tarpon behind the boat at night in most areas. You need a stern light though. We rigged 2 flashlights that we hung from the davit a few inches above the water. Give it an hour and watch the action. The tarpoon are finicke so bring a variety. DOA's , Gulps, crabs, shrimps, etc
Make sure to go by Willie T's the food is suprisingly good but the people watching is amazing, not to mention the Rum! Best vacation yet

| Mullet Cut, I heard about those back of the boat poons under light and that sounds great, but I think that in June the tarpon may be elsewhere. When were you there and were you under the impression they were there year round? |

| I was there in june and july there were lots of tarpoon. At night we would dive and they would come right up to you. Anytime you dump table scrapes in the water all sorts of snapper grouper and jacks show up. |

| I was there end of May/June, They will be there. If you want Bone fish you have to go to Anagada. Typical Bahama looking island, the only island in the BVIs with no mountains. You can get a guide or if you have a descent dinghy you can ride around to the flats and wade around looking for them. |
