Just got me a new fly rod. Have a lake behind my apartment with largemouths, peacock bass, mayan cyclids, etc in it. The largest fish that I have seen so far is big carp about 8-10lbs or so that come up in the shallows some times. Anyone know if I can catch one of these things on a fly, what type of fly would be used, and how I would present it to them?
Also, here is a picture of my first catch on the fly rod...

I tied some the other day off of some pictures that I saw, literally make it look like grass I can post the pictures if thats something your interested in seeing

Saw a fly fish show on the tube this weekend where they were catching carp on dry flies. It was up north somewhere but, guy was slayin 'um. He was matching the hatch - some sort of cicada dry fly. Carp were up feeding on surface hatch. He was catching 5-8# carp on a 5-6wt rod and was having a blast. They really made some strong runs and often went into the backing.
I bet that peacock was fun!

skinnee - a few guys in Colorado got big into carp on the fly. Wrote a good little book on the subject. "Carp on the Fly", go figure!

Out West they call them Rocky Mountain Bonefish! I remember the book saying 'where else in Colorado can you sitefish and hook a 20lb fish that will take your line into the backing?'
I was still trying to figure out catching trout, so I did not do much carp fishing. I recall they had a lot of flies imitating local seeds and berries and sight fishing, landing the fly a few feet in front of the carps cruising path.

Thanks for the tips. This definitely gives me some ideas. I've seen them a lot out there and when they are feeding, they are eating off the bottom. My cast isn't at all that great yet, so maybe I will eventually get lucky. I can definitely see how the fly stuff is addictive though.
And yes, I think that the Peacocks are all over down here. I think that people make the trips to South America to get the really big ones. I've seen pictures in tackle shops, etc down here, but don't think I have seen any evidence of any over 8lbs or so yet, so that might be why people travel to the remote places. Who knows though. Also, one of the guys in the fly shop told me that they had some kind of big freeze down here a few years ago that killed off a lot of them and that they are still recovering. It's just pretty cool to see them and the largemouths hunting the same shallows... |

| Skinneej, tie a dry fly that looks like a whole slice of bread. I've seen carp eat them before.Not the flies the bread! When you get that fly tied, post pictures of it. |

Got 2 more pigs today in about 30 minutes of fishing. Pretty (**() fun! They put up a great fight on the fly. It's only a matter of time before they name this lake after me...
Also, found out that they FLA state record is like 9 lbs. That's probably why people go to South America. I think that they get enormous down there. |

Definitely. I'm fishing about 100' from my front door. Although not sure what the bite will be like in September. They are about to spawn and were pretty active today. |

hey skinnee - met your brother a few days ago. Well, have known him for awhile he works across the street but just connected the dots. Said you guys have a trip coming up to do some fishing...but now can't remember where he said you all are heading.

My pig of the day:
Fished for a little longer today. Saw a couple dozen peacocks in the lake but some were a bit spooky. I got 2 peacocks, 1 largemouth, and 2 mayan ciclids... My buddy Dave got 3 peacocks. |

Small world! My boat is up in the Lantana\Boynton Beach area. That might have been what he was telling you. I live in Miami, but keep the boat up there. He and his wife\kids are heading down here to see us and I am goign to take them out to do some sort of fishing (whatever is biting then). |

Carp will eat flies pretty well. We catch em here in the upstate on the lake pretty regular. GREAT fighters, and fun to sight cast to. Google "carp flies" and you'll get an idea of what to use. I like a weighted fly that looks like a gotcha, with a bunch of hair on the body... dark brown and black are my go to colors. Get your fly right in front of them and twitch as they come near. Then hold on. Good luck, looks like you have a small slice of Heaven right there in your backyard! |
