My wife is heading to the UK next month along with some of her friends as they are tagging along on a HS group trip with one of her friends who's a teacher.
Her phone does not do international, but I have heard that Verizon will supply her with one for the trip. I am stopping by today to get the details and was wondering if this is the best way to go?..or maybe some sort of calling card that would be usable from her hotel(s)? If she goes with a calling card I have a fear of some crazy surcharges from the hotel she may be calling from.
Appreciate any advice some of you seasoned travelers may be able to offer.
Thanks

Skype is the way to go. If she has a phone that she can do wifi with and can skype with then that is the way to go. Of course you have to have another device that can skype but that is the way to go in my opinion.

| X2 on the Skype. Also if you have a GMAIL account you can do a video chat through that as well. |

Doing the international phone swap with Verizon worked best for us. Fairly inexpensive. They just swapped the phone for an identical phone that was brand new in the box. Transferred everything to the SIM card so it acted like the normal phone, even included an international charger.
Went on a really short international trip a few weeks ago and instead of doing the swap on my company phone, Verizon added a three day plan with unlimited data and $.99/minute calls for $40.
The Skype and other internet calling was not a good option because the hotels charged $20 - $40 per night for internet. It was often very slow service and you often did not get a full 24 hours, you had to repurchase it in the am.
You can also get a Tracphone when you arrive at the airports there. The Tracphone ensures you are not going to get hit with any unexpected charges when you get home.
AT&T was really bad. I had to keep the international rate on my IPhone for 3 months after I returned because the charges continued to roll in for well over a month, even though they were not high with the plan. |

Phone swap was less expensive than internet access on my trip to China in January. Since upgraded to an international based Crackberry.

| Went to Ireland last year, and took an unlocked sim phone and bought a sim card at the airport. Dirt cheap. Less than .10/min. Even back to the US was about $0.27. Bought a $10 card, and came home with money on the card. I'd take the battery out of the verizon before the last leg of the flight overseas, to remove any chance of pushing. |

Looked at these choices and if it was me going I think I probably would have went with bringing an unlocked sim phone, but she was uneasy about that, so we're just gonna go with the Verizon swap.
Thanks all for the input.
