Had a cough and. or sore throat since November. I went to the VA ER today. They said I have had every test I need but nothing can be found to let them know what is wrong with me.I went to ENT, she sent me some meds for acid reflux/ cough. I start talking in the am ,. hopefully this will stop the coughing.I know I am tired of this. She told me that it could be a number of things and would see me in 2 months. I'm not waiting 2 more months.

Do not wait two more months.. Did they do any X-rays? Are you on a blood pressure med or did you start any new meds around that time? Lisinopril will give a lot of folks a annoying cough.....hope you figure out what it is . Take care.

Not to scare you, but I have a friend who had a long term cough and it turned out to be lung cancer! Get more extensive tests and do NOT wait and see!!! And she never smoked!!

No new meds , not on BP meds. Had chest xray. cscan of sinus. scope down the throat , scope in nose 2 times. Penfishing I was trying home solutions. I did gargle with full strength hydrogen peroxide, finally read fine print better, found I was suppose to mixed 1/2 with water.Sore throat was hurting quite bad last night , I gargled w/ warm salt water, feels better. I woke about ev 45 minutes during the night coughing last nite. I will ask gfor an appt w/ ENT in about 2 weeks. If they cant help then I am going to patient affairs and ask to see a specialist on the outside aand VA to pay for it.

Have you ever had any seasonal allergies? Sometimes sinus drainage can trickle towards the back of your throat while your sleeping (lying flat) and trigger a cough. An antihistamine could help if that's the problem. It will dry up your sinuses. I have been on allegra for the past 2 months myself. It's that time of year. Good luck with your cough.

Mother-in-law had a cough for several months. Realized it started a couple weeks after she started eating a spoonful of peanut butter with here oatmeal at breakfast. Could be a simple food allergy. Hopefully that is all!

| Ditto on the reflux. I had a cough for a couple of months, no other symptoms. Mentioned the cough to my Dr. and he asked did I get reflux? I said yep, from time to time. He prescribed me something and in a few days it went away. |

Allergies aren't something you either have or don't have. People develop allergies, and they get over allergies, throughout their entire lives. It's how the immune system works. Your cough may have nothing to do with an allergy, but unless you take a skin test, you can't guess whether or not you have a food allergy if it's subtle.

Many respiratory symptoms, such as chronic cough and wheezing, can also be due to heartburn, likely because stomach acid is getting into your lungs.
If you suspect heartburn is at the root of your breathing difficultiespossibly because it occurs immediately after eatingyou may want to talk to your doctor about getting a pH test. The test is an outpatient procedure that measures the amount of acid in your esophagus over a 24-hour period and can help determine if you have acid reflux.

JimIslander, thanks for clearing that up , my wife told me the same thing. Easy , the PA gave me some meds for possilble acid reflux. Said it takes a week b4 meds can work. If there is a test, then I cant undeerstand why she didnt have it done b4 giving me meds for it. She said it could be COPD, post nasal drip. If all these things are a try this and then try that , it might take forever to find what is the cause. I cant put up with this much longer.I think a woman at church told me that there is a test tom find if I have COPD. Once again I cant understand why this test wasnt done.

I had the same thing 2 years ago. Lasted about 4 mths and never felt bad. I went to doctor and specialist. Recommended everything from alka seltzer to antibiotic to inhalers. I don't know what finally worked. I think it just went away. The worst thing was not being able to lay down to sleep. Had to get used to my chair and even worse I still sleep there often.
