Do we have any on this site? have been fighting this pain in my leg for 3 weeks now and getting very tired of it. Up until the last few day's I haven't been able to sit for more than a minute before the pain starts. Knee feels kinda numb and lower part of leg is tingly. Had a MRI done last monday and they come up with 2 bulgeing discs and narrowing of the spinal collum which might be pinching off a nerve. Had someone tell me to go to a chiropractor and see if that would help. I just want some thoughts on this before I make any rash decisions. Haven't been told one way or the other if need surgery or just some kind of shots.

carolinacoot, I've had the same ongoing problems with my L3/L4 & L4/L5 discs for about 10 years now. Here's what I can tell you to make the back better. Constantly keep an ice pack on and off regularly and take Liquid Advil for a several days until the swelling goes down and you're able to walk better. I actually still ice my back after any physical activity. If you don't rest, the disc swelling will not go down. Yes, I would recommend chiro and massage. One of the most important things to do, is to build your core muscle group to take pressure off of your lower back. Go see Stephen Khouri at Khouri Chiropractic and Health Solutions downtown. He is the College of Charleston and Charleston Batteries Chiropractor and has a great way of treating. If you go in, tell him Ed Greene sent you. Good Luck. If you need any other information, just let me know.

| It sounds like you have sciatica from the disc pinching the very large sciatic nerve. A chiropractor should spot this and being responsible should refer you to Neurologist as this will not go away with Chiropractic treatments but the treatments could offer some temporary relief. |

I have a herniated L5/S1. Was causing me severe left leg pain for months. Numbness in the right leg. My hamstring was tight as hell. Ice, E-Stem, and stretching my hamstring got me 95% better. I used to not be able to sit at all, after a few weeks of therapy, I was pretty good to go. There are a lot of good stretches (apply heat first) you can do to strengthen your core and help loosen things up. I also got a lumbar injection but I don't feel much different before/after. I'm currently sitting on a plane flying across the country in coach with zero discomfort.
Another thing that has REALLY helped me sit, especially when really hurting, is putting a small pillow on my lower back. This helps curve the spine and open things up down there. I now travel with an inflatable lumbar pillow.
This helps me with pain management: http://www.lgmedsupply.com/lgelteunandm.html This is the pillow:http://www.amazon.com/OPTP-Original-McKenzie-Inflating-Airback/dp/B001MPXQD0

While I'm sure there are some chiropractor's out there that can help with some pain, the last time I visited one I walked/stumbled/crawled out with 3 torn ligaments in my lower back. I was out of work for 6 weeks and on pain meds and 8 weeks of physical therapy and electro shock treatments. The pain doctor I visited said 1/2 or better of his patients were due to injuries caused by chiropratic "treatments". I'm sure they help with realignments and some minor issues but there is no way in hell I'd go to one to treat a real medical issue. If it were me, I'd see a real doctor until the problem was solved.

^^ I've heard that too. I'd go to a physical therapist and see what they can do. Tell them what your MRI said. After my first visit, i felt 500% worse, but over the next few sessions, I felt much better over a few weeks. You might consider the cortisone injections too. Very easy painless procedure. Only after exhausting all those options would I consider surgery.

First off let me say thanks for all suggestions and recommendations. E-mailed the MRI results to Dr. Pat Leonard aka(patient maker) to see what he would have to say. He looked things over and asked me to come in and talk. I went in and he takes a couple of xrays. After closely looking everything over he tells me he could help me with most of my problem except for the one disc that had the most issue.I went and had a nerve block to help relieve most of the pain. After 4 days still had problems with my left leg and couldn'tnavigate steps without doing one at a time. Went to see Dr. Leonard and after a couple of trips I was able to go up steps one foot after the other not step up,pull up other foot and move up to the next 1 at a time. He also checked my left knee because it has bothered me for a long time. He has popped it a couple of times and now I don't have to wonder if I can stand on it in the am. Only time it bothers me now is if I have to spend any amount of time on it at work. Stono thanks for the suggestion and thank you Patientmaker for your help and honesty about what you could and could'nt help with.

FWIW, they don't like it when you say "popped", the preferred term is adjusted.
Glad to hear your questions on here helped you out. Lots of good folks on here willing to offer advice and help.
