My charter client caught this while sheepshead fishing with me a week or so ago. Any guesses on the weight?

Uhm... A bigun! But its hard to really guess weight in pictures. It's way bigger than the "80 pound" fish in Inshore Reports. What's your guess Jason?

Great photo. I would estimate around 65 to 75 pounds. Its time to hit Port Royal Sound with 1/2 a crab for some great action.. Thanks for the post.

I'd guess 70. Fine fish for certain I wonder how old a drum like that is?
Nauti-Hooker, do you launch at the Cheechessie ramp? I think I saw you there a couple of weeks ago.

40 - 60 pounds are normally around 30 years old, whereas they reach about 40" around 15-20 years of age. They very slowly get longer over time, but generally get much fatter and heavier as the age. In other words, a young 40" BD will weigh much less than an old 40" BD.
A 50# drum is probably 30 years old. A 70# plus drum is likely closer to 50 years old!

| I can't say that I would??? But a fish like that deserves to be released. Hope it was, but with the blood on the belly, maybe not? Anyone know the lifespan of one? That is one impressive fish! |

Cracker,
I leave out of the Cheechessie ramp every now and then. Probably was me. Was I in a Ranger Ghost? |

Not to worry. That fish is WAY over the slot (14"-27" TL), so they let it go. Even dead, you can't keep it.

Thanks for the answer. Yep, got to release that old fish, it's almost as old as I am

Yeah, that was you. I was in a blue Maverick and we talked for a few minutes after you dropped off your clients. I don't think either of us caught many fish that day. I'll be sure to speak if I see you there again. And dang nice fish!

Easy,
The fish was released and swam off healthy. Even if you could still keep one that big I would have let it go. Got to respect your elders and that fish was surley older than me. |

| Natui, good to hear he's gone back where he belongs. That fish could tell stories about, Back In The Day! He looked like he should have had a long white beard! Got to respect him. |
