Be weary and go through a company I have had many reports of private individuals, from other states renting property that doesn't exist through craigslist. If you do a little bit of research this shouldn't pertain to you. But if it seems like a good deal it probably probably isn't the reason you are getting a good deal is because the property doesn't exist. Just a heads up, heard of someone losing $2250 today

Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

You not only need to be cautious about these problems but also the condition and exact location of the house you are renting. Two weeks ago my parents invited us to take a week off and bonefish in the Abacos, trip was nice but the house they had bought earlier in an auction turned out to be a complete dump! Ants all over the bed, we even ended up renting a condo the last couple days to make the rest of the trip worth it. All being said, if you don't see any reviews or the reviews arent good don't rent the house!!!!

I have never been disappointed in houses we rented through VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner). I always Google Earth them to get the lay of the land.

Charity Auctions are getting famous for ripoffs. There is one I know of that auctions a place in Central America. The owner collects the first $4,800 and the rest goes to the charity (usually just a few hundred bucks)...sounds ok, until you see that the place is rented 52 weeks a year, all from various charity auctions. The house is sold "with use of amenities", but you have to pay useage fees for the "free" amenities. I added up the true costs a few years ago and it was over $12,000 for the week. All of that, plus since it sells so many weeks, getting a prime week is all but impossible. If you are at auction #48 or 50 the week you get is the ones that are leftover. Don't know if this is still going on, but it was two years ago.

I have had very good success using VRBO as well. I've even rented two properties in Nicaragua and had good results.

If you're lucky enough to be fishing, you're lucky enough.
