About a 6 foot black snake trying to get to my baby chicks. I dont care what anyone says...snakes are not good. The bible tells us to crush their heads and I did it with a 20 gauge double barrel

Had one on the side of my house Saturday. Don't know my snakes that well. Black non-venemous, shaking its tail as I approached it had a lizard in its mouth and did not want me to have it. I let it go, but I really like the lizards for their bug eating ablilities. Hope it does not wipe them out.

just waiting for alabama fan to call you a sissy.... This years took 3 "chicken snakes" one actually had 8 eggs swolled, one died choking on a baby chicken, the other was just in the wrong place at the right time. And one copper head by the hay bail that actually struck and hit my daughters shoe. Still dealing with nightmares from her. Just pitching some hay to her horses.

If I had no chickens I'd let the chicken/rat snakes live other than that I have no use for them. Figure one rattle snake eats a rabbit/squirrel and might not eat for another 3-6 months, but still has the ability to seriously hurt or kill a human child/grown up. I took out quit a few squirls and rabbits last year, so i'm not worried about them subdueing overpopulation. Of all snakes I'll go out of my way to kill a rattle snake, even putting myself in harms way. I had the same opinion of sharks, but I rarely swim in the ocean now and only keep a few to eat. But I don't see myself giving up walking the woods. I'm top predator on this planet and plan to keep it that way. I've watched water snakes eat my bull frogs at the pond. Why? Frogs are in worse danger than our snake population.

Funny thing about it all is I actually don't mind spiders. They eat bugs and lot's of them. Also Wasps, I won't kill a nest, but will knock it down if it is in an area too close to my liking.

I'd also like to see more alligator permits given out, but at least they will eat turtles, which are one of our biggest eaters of baby ducks. They top large mouth bass and big catfish on baby ducks.

ask a dozen scientist/biolegist and you'd get 11 1/2 different answers.

.. don't slam me on spelling.

Really bad rep for snakes will be Florida if we don't have a couple of very harsh cold winters in a row to keep the dann constrictors from addapting and moving on like fire ants armadillos and the stupid beettle that is killing all our bay trees.

All this stuff said, I love nature. Wife and I spend more money than we really should on wild bird seed, year round deer feeders, salt/mineral blocks, raising abbadoned wildlife, bat houses, bird houses, letting the wrens take over plant pots ment to have something planted in them, ... I stop here wife just went to bed and morning comes early.

Good night to all and to all a good night!

Marget Jane............ put all that snake killing energy into killing some yots! Also here's my admonishing side. Shooting on concrete? That could get you hurt. good rake handle would have done nice.

I will go out of my way to save snakes other than copperheads. Me and them have a long history and not a good one. Rattlesnakes do not bother me in the least, that are actually my favorite venomous snakes.

Only rattler I worry about is the one I can hear and not see. That being said, I don't mind snakes. But will put a venemous snake out of it's misery in the blink of an eye. We have probably enough non-venemous to keep the vermin on check. I won't go out of my way to kill one, but if he and I are on the same trail....well, like Fred67 said, we are the top predators on this planet (that is until we get to the arctic, Alaska, Africa, India or South America or get in the ocean). Those places all have critters that refuse to recognize man's place as top predator. Lol.

Take a Democrat with you when you go into the woods and make him walk point! But then again, a snake won't bite them! Can't get the taste out of their mouths.

All I did was protect my baby chicks...if I had not killed him he would have come back. I got kittens that when they get older will take care of rats and snakes.

When I was a kid, we kept a couple of pigs running loose on the farm. Dang things will kill and eat a snake every time they see one. And rattler bites don't seem effect them too badly.

I agree with sells;

Looks like a Northern Black Racer. Hard to tell, but could also be an errant Indigo or common rat snake. All of which can be friendly guests... Unless of course those buggers are eyeing your chickens. How about this handsome devil?

it was not an Indigo, too thin and not shiny enough. It was a racer, Coluber constrictor.

When you kill one snake you, by indirect default, increase the mice population.

Bad boy! M-Jane! Bad, bad, bad!

I got 3 kittens and mouse traps if I need them Jisuho

Old no shoulders has no permission to be eating my chicks .

I am not sure about these snakes...we always called a 5-6 ft black snake a coach whip. Is an Indigo runner what I am talking about when I say coach whip?

I think the short fat black snake is a rat or corn snake when it has a checkered belly.

It was a black racer and would not have perished had he not tried persistantly to get under the doors and into the building.

M-Jane, a coach whip is similar if not thinner and longer. But it does have a distinctive brownish hue at the back one quarter of its body. I have never heard of an Indigo 'runner' before. But there are always local, common names for snakes.

You are unlikely to see a true Indigo around here. Growing up to 8 feet long none had been seen by DNR or any herpetologist in SC from some time (in the wild that is). They were known to occur in Bft, Jasper Counties. Now mostly in southeast GA and Florida. If you do, please don't chop it up. It is an endangered snake AND it will eat other snakes.

Dang, it's just a black racer. Pick the scoundrel up and carry it somewhere else where it's safe, it's not hurting anything. About as much threat as a toad

We live in the Savannah River swamp and have a lot of snakes. I generally let them go in peace, unless they are a threat to the dogs. The dogs usually let them go in peace too, they are used to double teaming on a trespasser.

They are not used to getting double teamed though! Sam isn't sure what to do here...

He decided to let these go in peace and make baby snakes

Interesting behavior, I'd never seen this before.

Saw 2 6' black snakes doing it when I was a kid. Kept wrapping their heads around each other twisting continuously. Covered quite a bit of ground. I guess it felt pretty good, both their eyes were rolled back in their heads. They both lit up a cig afterward.

It ain't no mystery...this beer's history!
