Monday at 12:30 I was eating lunch with a fellow colleague talking fishing and the phone rang. I normally would not disrupt lunch but the caller ID said I had too. Captain Ed was returning an earlier call to discuss the weekend fishing. We talked a bit and he tells me they are going tomorrow and asks if I would like to come. Well in about 30 seconds my schedule was clear and I was GO!

Brianh picked me up at 7:30 we met Chunky in Manning took a power nap and were on the Earl E Bird at 5am.

Captain Ed, Earl and little Earl aka Earl E Bird have done a TON of work to bring the 55 foot Bobby Sullivan into her fishing condition. Very impressed with all they have put into her.

Ride out was comfortable in the 3 to 4 footers. She is no rocket ship but when you can sleep on the couch and watch tv in the AC there is no reason to haul butt.

Put lines in around 8 and it was ON! First fish hit the port bridge pole and dropped it, Captain Ed would have nothing of this and added the magic touch, next thing you know his 50W is screaming!!! ZZZZZZZZ!!

The rod was handed to the cockpit and the battle began!

The crew worked him around the spread and in goes #1!

Never had a super strong bite but we stayed on them pretty much all day.

Caught some more blackfin and a couple dolphin the we realized we were missing Mr. Wahoo to complete the meat fish slam. Well guess what we found....

With the slam complete we kept working to bring home the groceries. Earl E Bird ran a good spread and did not lose a single fish boat side.

I got a chance to reel in a couple of fish and even sent Chunky up on the bridge to show Captain Ed how to do it All Rise Style.

Later in the afternoon we hooked up on a good blackfin and Brianh was on the rod. Fish got boat side and wanted nothing of the gaff. At one point Brianh lost his footing and I thought he may go over board many would have dropped the rod but we knew Brian would go to the bottom before anything tore that rod out of his hands. Salty Mike grabbed him and stood him back up. EarlE Bird stuck him with the gaff and in the box he went.

Got a chance to play with my new camera a bit in sports mode.

The day was running out and Salty Mike made the call to bring them in at 5 and head back to the hill. Ed and i were on the bridge. He showed me a spot on the chart plotter and said "we will pick up a couple right there!" We were about 5 to 10 mins out. We cranked in a few rods but left the bridge deployed. Got over the spot and.....

nothing.....

Oh well....

Ed grabbed the handle and made one crank to bring it in...

POW!!! snapps the rigger! GOT HIM!! then it goes slack, I was standing over the center rod. It screamed to life!!! CRANK! CRANK! CRANK!!! But there was no cranking on this one he was headed to the other side of the Flemish cap! Finally got the rod off the bridge and down to the cockpit. Earl E bird hands the rod to Chunky to start the battle. He was down to less than a quarter spool. We cleared all the rods and started talking trash to Chunky about letting the fish rest.

Finally got him to the boat, Salty Mike and EarlE Bird closed the deal and put him in the box. What a way to end the day!

Ended with
9 blackfin
9 dolphin
2 wahoo
1 reef donkey!

Hot color was Captain Ed's hand tied lure he called the Jellyfish squirt. I need to swing by Atlantic Game and pick up a few from Jeremy. He has bags of Captain Ed's stuff there.

Nice ride home in the setting sun.

Highlights

Fishing on a bigger boat. My contender is great and all but having a 17 foot wide cockpit is REAL NICE! Not to mention all the accessories of home in the salon.

Earl, friends, and family could not have been nicer. Fun group of guys to hang out with.

The Bird!

I guess it was fitting that we were on the Earl E Bird but we had this little guy spend most of the day with us. He found us off shore and we gave him water and bread. He took a few naps, sat on a few heads and seemed to enjoy our company.

Good luck charm I guess.

Way to go, Scott and crew! Know well what you mean 'bout it being nice to enjoy all the comforts of a Sporty that our dear Contenders simply cannot provide... Mine is telling me she wants to fish, especially now after three successful trips on The Most Comfortable Mudslinger! API goes to St. Johns next week, and she'll get her offshore fix on then!

The crab pots are full most all the time 'cause Jack works the pots hard, so just say the words! We could have a crab feast the night before fishing!
