I recently bought a 1999 Chevy S-10 pickup for my son to drive (me too). It only had 47,000 miles on it and is in really good shape. It has manual doors/windows and I was interested in installing power door locks/remote keyless entry. Does anyone have any experience with aftermarket keyless entry systems, one to recommend or stay away from?
If you really want to go this route, the easiest thing to do would be to find doors from a junk yard that already have the power window regulators and electric locks. As far as putting aftermarket keyless entry it's no big deal once you have power windows and locks. Most aftermarket systems come with an alarm system also. There are some great working systems out there. Remote start too.
I tried putting an aftermarket keyless entry on my 2000 Dodge Ram 1500. It didn't work. I double checked and checked again to make sure I put it on right but still so good. I already had power locks and windows. I could not find the problem so I took it back off and returned it. Been using the keys ever since.
My suggestion is to ask a few electrical specialists for any tricks of the trade.
on the other hand, simple roll up windows and manual locks mean less to break down. Power window motors are not cheap, I had to replace one of mine. $100 bucks to do it myself.
