Fished south out of wassaw on my buddys 26 world cat called Broker
Started trolling early and broke a nice blackfin off feet from the gaff
Picked a few teenage dolphin and missed a few as well
Bite slowed a little and the boys agreed to try a few tricks we learned in Venice LA earlier this year
Pounded the AJs until we couldnt take it anymore but did manage something I dont think ill ever see again
Fish weighed 39#s and would have beaten the GA state record if he wasnt about to hit the grease in a couple minutes
He fell to a butterfly jig with 65# braid
I have fished with some of the best bottom fisherman on the east coast over the last 20 years and they have never seen a Gag close to this
We had a smaller scamp a few porgys and 10 nice dolphin to finish the day |

Pretty much
We didnt even check the GA record until the next morning
My buddy who was the angler on the fish got some horrible news when we got back to cellphone range finding out he lost a coworker and friend while we were offshore
We really just wanted to make sure he was ok and look out for our buddy in a time of need

It was a Gag we had a marine biologist onboard for the trip
I was shown a picture of another big one that was caught in 05 that a friend showed me at a fishfry last night
He said it was 42#s and it was every bit as big as ours
Im respooling a couple of the Avets this week with 130jb
Maybe we can luck into another one |

Thanks everyone for the kind words! It was a crazy day with a big Hi and a bigger Low within 5 hours of each other.
This trip really got my wife a bit concerened because she asked me "what if that would have been her or my daughter, how would someone reach you when you are 70 miles offshore?" I know you can't live your life in a bubble, but we do fish offshore a lot and things will happen when you are out of touch for 24 hours or so. I wish spot would get further in technology so I can receive text as well as send.
Sorry for the rant, I guess this is just the chance we take to go after big fish! |

Are you a member of Tow Boat or Sea Tow? Both of these companies have tall towers and strong transmitters. I have talked to Steve at Towboat 65 miles offshore. If we are running late, I will call him on 16, switch to 12 and he will call the misses. She can also call him and have him relay a message. Best money you can spend is to become a member with one of these services.
