Jigging for flounder yesterday, caught two that were 13" tossed back. Both swallowed the "gulp" plastic bait. Is there anyway those fish live? My thaughts....No

Hard to say but a friend of mine caught a slot red that had 5 or so gulp baits and jig heads in his stomach. He was doing fine when he caught him but not so good when he hit the grease...

I've always used bronze hooks live baitin...rust out faster.... I caught a redfish last year that had passed a hook- well almost, the hook eye and shank was exiting from the rear. The fish was fine and released again ( The hook came out easily, or I would've left it to minimize damage). It was a stainless hook.
I've heard a bronze hook takes 24hrs to rust out in salt...and 72 for a ss. I don't think I believe this- doesn't it have to be exposed to oxygen to rust? Sorry- thinking out loud

How long you think this jighead was stuck in the mouth of this fish?

Should have been more specific. Both fish were hooked in the corner of the mouth, but had swallowed the plastic....

That jig looks very new. That type only takes a week or so to rust out. If it had been more than a few days old, you would have seen some rust on the hook unless the water was very brackish where the fish was caught.

Regarding the pic size, all you have to do is open the pic with Paint and click on the resize button. Depending on the original size, you may have to reduce more than 50% to obtain a manageable size. Save it with a different name so you don't alter your original. A 5 megapixel photo usually requires only a 50% reduction but a 8 or 12 megapixel may have to be reduced a little more to fit properly.

i caught a red with a badonkadonk lodged way in the back of its mouth and it was by far the laziest red i ever fought even at 26" not eating for a bit, however it wasnt hard to remove and it swam off ok. lure looked to be at least 3 days old if not longer...worthless to cast it again. if it just swallowed the gulp i imagine they will probably be ok.

if there was no split ring or knot on it, and it's a mullet mimic, you may have found my lure!

dangdonkadonks' front eyes have right angles on them, and i lost a brand new one that was braid straight tied with a loop knot- bottom of the loop cut through after a few good drag pulls about 2-3 weeks ago. guess i have to put a duolock on it, since a split ring can work a loop knot free on a good fight. would've been much easier if they'd designed it with a rounded eye.

My guess is the fish broke you off and about a beer later hit your other rod. LMAO.

A hook "rusting out" is often more fiction than fact. More times than not the hook will get expelled by scar tissue rather than rusting out. Yes a bronze hook rusts extremely fast...but only after it has been in salt water and then exposed to air/oxygen. Put a bronze hook in a bucket of salt water and do not remove it, then wet one with salt water and leave out. The hook in the bucket a week later will be barely rusted at all and the one you took out of the water will fall to pieces. It is still usually best that if you can not easily remove the hook quickly, cut it off as close to the hook eye as possible. You will be surprised what they will survive, especially reds.Have caught them with leader coming out of their anal vent with growth all over it. Just my .02, hope it helps and good luck.

The fish swallowed a plastic bait only, no hook. I would think a plastic grub that is too big to pass would do more damage than a hook stuck in the corner of the mouth..????

If it only swallowed the plastic bait and not the hook then my guess would be that the fish will regurgitate it back up and out no problem...
