We were happy to take advantage of the weather today once the storms passed and enjoy a nice ocean. We did alot of diving today and I am worn out. We started diving one of our spots in 100ft and Kyle got a decent cobia right away. We were working hard up and down...up and down diving 50-80ft on every dive but the target fish weren't showing up. Finally Gabe yelled african popmpano and i went down and saw it and shot it....but after a hard run the spear somehow pulled out. I regained my line on reel and started swimming into the current. 20ft from the boat i looked down and realized that what i thought was a cuda was a WAHOO!! ....my favorite fish in the ocean. From talks with spear pros, i needed a good shot in the tail or i would likely loose the fish b/c of their speed and power. I lined up as perfect on the tail as possible but probably focused to hard and missed by a millimeter and he took off. I could have easily shot it in the belly but didn't want to lose the fish and kill it in the process. 40 lb wahoo/season maker gone bye bye. So pissed!!!
We regrouped and headed to another spot only to find worse vis and stronger current. So we headed back to spot A that we should have never left. 1st drop down i see African Pompanos again. Within the hour Mike, Kyle and I each got one with Mikes being biggest by a few pounds. Mike also shot a really nice cobia earlier in the session that somehow pulled out after a long fight. The season for us freediving with good vis and pelagic fish is really short and days like this are special. Super stoked to have it work out and share it with good buddies. I wanna know how people did trolling today please!!

Well we weighed the fish with my expensive/accurate boga scale this morning. Kyles fish weighed 38, my fish was 40 and mikes fish was 48.5!!! The current freediving world record is 49 so had we gotten mikes fish to scale yesterday(we got back pretty late) he would have the new record. Most important is just pushing his limits and testing himself against nature but so sick shooting a record fish of that proportion. We dove all last year and biggest fish was 41 by michael mattson so mad props to mike.

I dive all the time, including today, and never see the african pompano.
You will have to show me your trick sometime if you come dive with us again.
Trolling was very solid and dives on the way in to line the box with hogfish, grouper, and 4 lobster was a bonus.
I'll put a report up tomorrow. Sneak peak:

Nice job guys. The pomps have been showing up thick this year. But whoever told you to shoot the hoo in the tail, either, didn't know what they were talking about or was being very cruel with a sick joke. Shoot for the head next time. They're usually pretty docile if you hit them in the head. Certainly not as powerful (not even close) to an African pompano half his size.
