Throw big streamers. Had good success just walking the beaches using spinning gear throwing spooks and jerk baits as well, acted alot like redfish in the surf. Wife caught a monster on live bait.

I watched a show a few weeks ago where a guide in Mexico would lure the rooster fish in with a hookless popper into casting distance for the fly casters to reach. Looked fun

I had good luck with big red&white and purple&white deceivers, but with any fishing I'm sure color patterns change daily.

seen bits and pieces on you tube. wild stuff. i'm not sure if the beaches where were are staying hold fish like that. i've read it can be a hit or miss proposition. you just never know.

either way i think i've got a good guide that will take us to them.

i caught one. but i didn't earn any style points.

learning curve was steeper than i thought. my 9 wt and flies were useless and the 1 handed strip was way too slow.

the capt. said "i don't want to re-invent the wheel for you but...." and then told me that everything i was doing was completely wrong.

switched me to a 10 weight, big sardine pattern, and showed me the goofy 2 handed strip with the reel under your armpit.

eventually either i got it right or we found the the village idiot. great animal. very aggressive and hard fighting.

i would recommend it it you ever get the chance.
