Some months ago I asked folks for input on a kayak prototype that I was working on. I haven't worked out how to manufacture them exactly, so I am building some, for now. I added foot braces to this one today (not pictured) I might fish this one in the IFA. Thanks to all who gave advice.

Beautiful! Congrats to you, I LOVE the entrepreneurial spirit. The design looks very good, and I bet its lightning fast.
Are you planning to keep these custom-wood fabrication, or maybe go with a more mass-produced construction? I think you are on to something there...

Looks great and a blast to be on! But it also doesn't look like there's s place for tackle and other storage or rodholders.

I'm hoping to mass produce. In fact, I'm meeting with some investors today. Multiplastics in Mount Pleasant might be able to thermoform the pontoons. I just don't know about costs. The one pictured is marine ply with West System and glass.
I did not do a good job of photographing the storage, but it's got it. The four hatches are roomy. You can even feed two-part or small rods into the pontoons. I just finished mounting rod holders to the back of the seat and a removable leaning post toward the front of the deck. There is also a system for mounting crates, coolers, etc. from the front or back of the deck.
When it is rigged up, I will post a pic. I am definitely open to feedback on better ways to do things.

| elgeebee, I held each of pieces and stood on a bathroom scale. The pontoons each way about 35lbs with the cross members. The deck turned out to be a little over built. Alone, it weighed about 25lbs, but after mounting the hardware and seat it probably weighs between 30 and 35lbs. Still, it breaks down so easily that an individual could move the boat in three separate pieces and even car-top-it, for that matter. |

eza88, this is really cool! If it weighs ~100lbs made out of ply and glass, it shouldn't be too bad out of plastic or even higher end materials. What are the dimensions? Width collapsed and expanded? Length? Is it a bear to turn with a paddle? Can I borrow it for the summer?
As for suggestions; I'd say just look at all of the fine sot kayaks out there and pic the best of the features from all of them. The pontoons look pretty tall compared to a kayak for instance. Do they need to be that tall or can they be made shorter and likely catch less wind. The ideas stimulated are endless... |

LocalHero, thanks for the comments. I'm considering polyethylene, ABS or maybe composite, and like you said, I think the weight will be O.K. Maybe a Nida Core honeycomb deck?
This first one is just under 12' on deck and expands from a 30" to 46" beam. The deck itself is 30"X48". The heighth of the pontoons is sort of a compromise to allow clearance below the deck in a chop. If you notice in the video, it might not be good to go too much lower.
As for turning, I'll spin that answer by saying that it tracks exceptionally well. Actually, it's not that bad, because the boat is not real long.
I'm hoping to pre-fish at Paradise Island Landing tomorrow after lunch if anyone wants to try it.

| To market to fresh water folks, and I know lots of kayakers will cringe, but money is money...an optional trolling motor mount behind the seat would be good. I really like it, I think you've done something special. |
