| Ok so im bumming around the stono inlet waiting for the tide to come in.... And I see 3.5 to 4 ft silver fish hit something on top of the water. The fish was totally airborne, and was about 50 yards in front of us. It was bad a**!! I dont want to say the "p" word, but could this be a tarpon?.. Anyone getting some poon on the business end of a fly rod around these parts? |

Sounds like poon. I've never heard of anybody around here but I've heard rumors of tarpon OTF in by a guy in Hilton head.

Could be either...poons are here now and the albies, although small, are in force in40 ish feet of agua. We caught a few allies and I know jr. And John ward have have recent encounters with the silver herring...and yessir you're quite correct...as far as I know, which is little- Raz Reid is the only one to land a SC poon otf....and yes 'twas Hilton head. BUT- chum was deployed...but I don't really care about measuring our egos- it was a SC poon-marlin fly...and if you've never me Raz..he is the man indeed

Here is the story on how the Fuzz used to do it, with Dr Miller as the angler. http://www.byrdultrafly.com/sctarpon.htm
I tried it with him a couple times, but it aint fly fishing. Raz claims to have found where they lay up around HH and has caught em that way (much more better). Several times in port royal sound I have had fish sliding around on top eating glass, and have had some bites on gummy minnows when they were doing that. The quality sightfishing opportunities are pretty rare and if one is hoping to catch one OTF up here, the only way is to be totally prepared at all times. |

Just returned from a baitfishing expedition with good conditions in the north with ZERO sightings or bites besides sharks. Lets wait until there's some more fish around. |
