Ok folks, we are returning to the Lowcountry after being gone for 6 years. I have a 15 foot canoe that I am experienced at using; I spent most of my teenage life either in a paddled jonboat or canoe lol.
I also have a 3 year old son who adores fishing and can actually cast an open faced rod as long as he's on stable ground. In the canoe, I do the casting until he grows a touch more stable.
We would have a second adult with us (not taking him alone; too dangerous).
I am looking for suggestions where I could take him that would be a reasonable place; somewhere I could put in, paddle around for a while, and return easily without fighting a crazy tide current.
Since it's been 6 years since I fished the area or lived there, I'm not coming up with much. Bushy Park might be kinda cool on the brackish side.
We aren't targeting any specific fish necessarily; just drowning bait and being father/son like we love :).

Idk where you live but bowena island on ji should be good. Not a lot of boat traffic or current or chop. $2 launch fee bit its for paddle sports only.

I challenge yakmans adv, that water can get bad you would have to pick your days, another place I would say is Pitt St bridge, you will have to watch the tides though on low you will be walking your canoe back in

Bowens Island is a good choice. $2 to launch. Not much boat traffic. Cold beer is available (even stuff called "food", too).
There is also a half sunken "pirate ship" 300-400 yards from the landing. If that won't keep a 3 year old entertained for a while, nothing will.
And if you don't catch anything, you can paddle up to Crosby's seafood to pick up a few fish to take home, anyway.

It's legally called folly creek I think, not folly river. When going to folly, the first bridge by Crosbys goes over folly creek(Bowens island creek, crosbys creek), second bridge by sand castle passes a creek that comes off folly creek, last bridge by mariners cay and has the boat ramp on other side is folly river. Use Google maps

Not sure where you are in the Lowcountry, but the VA Ave boat ramp is good. Since launching the boat there recently, seen tons of canoes and yaks and also some familys with young kids. As you go out to the Cooper obviousy gets a little rougher, but there are plently of places to paddle around before you get to the river.

I fish Bushy Park on a kayak a lot. There are tons of feeder creeks a short paddle from the landing and it has some pretty good fishing. Only on really windy days does it get kinda nasty. And in a canoe, you can put in or retrieve at low tide. When you get settled, shoot me a PM and I will gladly show you some spots for you and your son.

For what it's worth, I learned more about fishing Lake Moultrie and the surrounding rivers and canals from a 12 year old boy, than any of the folks I've met on this site. My friend Robie (who was killed in a wreck a couple years ago) lived across the street from the Hatchery and basically fished constantly. Trust me when I say that he knew vastly more about catching catfish than most of the folks I've seen on this site. I got to know him when he was 12, he was fatherless, and I got to know him and his mother and her boyfriend well, and spent the next 4 years catching more catfish than I could have ever imagined. He died when he was 20.
I don't count someone's age against them--- old or young. Both young and old can have smart@$$ attitudes and be cavalier-know-it-alls. |

Bowen's Island is a good spot. You aren't going to get many places that don't have currents etc. Go to your left and you pass Crosby's go to your right takes you out the the Folly River. Good fishing to the left. Drift the banks and creek mouths along there. You have boat traffic but it is minimal.

| Lol I've done Folly River in a 16' Old Town before--- the boat ramp just before you get to the pier. Was a bit freaky when the 20-30' vessels came by, but they were respectful to us and didn't bowl us over lol. I was with an adult friend at the time, I'd NEVER take my 3 year old to that particular spot lol. Gotta grow up a little before I attempt something like that with him. |

| I would go to shem creek boat ramp. ive put a canoe there and putted around towards the back at lower tides you shouldnt have a problem with boat traffic towards the back. plus there are still people around if you need assistance. |

| I agree with redbull. I also think that Folly Creek could be a sketchy spot for a canoe and a 3 year old. There are plenty of places up in the Francis Marion in the fresh/brackish creeks that would be cool and you wouldn't have to worry about any big boat traffic. Maybe the occasional jonboat, but that's it. There is a canoe/kayak launch on a tidal creek in Awendaw right along the Palmetto Trail that looked nifty but I haven't checked out any of these spots. |

Maybe I should take him out to the Grillage or the Jettis or something, or give him a tour of Ft. Sumter :)
Seriously though I'm tempted to go, WITHOUT my son, but with another adult, and do some shark fishing for some modest sized sharks (catch/release only!). I may be too chicken crap to try it though lol. |

Yes it will!
I've been in some creeks up in Murrel's Inlet in a jonboat with a 10hp motor that struggled more than you'd expect against the current. I would have never stood a chance in a canoe.
