I am fishing for blackfish in 100' next week and need to make up some rigs. My old J hook rigs from a few years back are now illegal and I know nothing about circle hooks. What size and style of circle hooks works well, and what size line will fit on the eyelets? I also hear you don't set the hook. Do you start reeling right away or pause a few seconds? Thanks Spongebob

I've caught them with 9/0 to those little hooks on a Lucanus jig. If it fits in their mouths you can catch them with it.

Good sized BSB's on a little Kabura style jig are fun but a good sized AJ not so much. I like the Diawa Conch and the Williamson Ebi jigs because they have a little bit stouter hook. The bigger bass will hit a 5oz butterfly jig like the Williamson Benthos and Abyss and tend to weed out the little fish.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

For our chicken rigs, we use 2/0 owners because in addition to sea bass, we usually target triggers, vermilion, porgies... and their mouths are strong but relatively small. If you are specifically targeting sea bass, use the jigs. Bigger is better. Salty is right, the little guys will still hit them, but it seems like only the big ones can get the bigger bait in their mouths.

Haven't used the Mutu, but it looks heavy duty. Don't go cheap on your hooks.

If you're fishing in 100', let one of those sea bass stay on the line in the middle of the water column and hang on!

My fishing buddy's like those Spro Jigs tipped with a hunk of meat pulled off the bottom as well and the jigs aren't that expensive.
