Discovered a different recipe that woks better for me than the clay/mix. 10Ibs flour,5Ibs.corn meal,10Ibs.fish meal and little of bottled fish attractant. I mix large quanities at the time, (usually buy the off brand in bulk at Sam,s Club) and store dry in air tight drum for the season. It's just alittle higher but give it a try... Also, I use a plastic milk crate w/ a layer of cardboard in bottom, lay 9-12 patties, another layer of cardboard and build layers. This holds approx. 60-80 bait patties and the flour mix is not near as messy in your boat (or in your shrimp!) Hope someone finds helpful |

Was about to ask a simple question until noticing your forum name. This question is well intended and in no way plays on your name (maybe).
Does your mix stink as bad as my 50/50 mix does? How does it hold together in the water? |

It will hold very well if you make the patties (about like the consistancy of like bread dough) and let them dry (in the milk crate)to form a thin outer crust (about the time it takes to drive to the coast from lexington). It does'nt stink unless you leave it out, I like the milk crate for another reason, I store it in my shop frig.and use it for the next trip. |

PC, I hear if you use self rising flower the bait will fall apart once in the water and pieces float. What is your experience?

| Try not to unless it was a slow day like yesterday. Don't like to use all my bait if their not there. It is harder to take apart and when it defrost the bottom ones start to melt into each other where you have to reshape all over again. Also if you think about it water tends to break it down faster like thawing it out in a sink of water for meats. It is my last resort from keeping it from going real bad and people in the bay from passing out down wind once I take the lid off the bucket !!!!!!! |

Sinlet, Have you tried putting a layer of wax paper on the freezer shelf and then the bait balls and another layer on top of the balls. It helps. I agree about freezing bait as a last resort.
You gotta love the South Carolina Lowcountry. |

I use the wax paper method. It works well for me. I usually spend a day making up the bait for the week. What I do not use, I refreeze.
So far so good.
AND it does nto smell so bad frozen

The term "self-rising" flour does not apply to using it as shrimp bait (no pun intended), I hear this alot. It doesn't matter which one you use. This mix has always held together well even the times I pick it up in the net (which I kind of like to do...). So far as freezing, I never have, always refrig.

| The wax paper sounds like a winner. 99% of the time I use all my bait on that trip. If I freeze it than I just put the whole bucket in the freezer so I never thought about putting sheets in the bucket. Good idea thanks. |

Do you guys believe in the PATTY thing? I always make round balls about the size of baseballs and usually put 4 per pole. Everyone always say that they roll, but my experience has been that 2 hours later.. I am still pulling up bait and SHRIMP.
I am relatively new to the sport (3 years) and really have no clue of wehat I am doing other than to say that my freezer is full and I am cathing shrimp.
Any advice would be appreciated.
