Sorry.... not pictures of the new 80 reel. I meant there are about eighty pictures here.
I know some folks have asked or may be curious about how these Avet reels hold up after use. They look good and feel good, and they are priced well. I’ve gotten parts very easily through Avet when I needed them, and I’ve gotten good service from them when I needed it as well. What about normal servicing though? What about how the reel will look and feel after it’s been used a lot?
Well, I have owned the reel shown below for a little over 2 years. I only caught a few fish on it the first year that actually pulled much drag and could be considered even working the reel by any means. These were mostly 5-40# dolphin and a couple wahoo.
So I decided to let a friend take the reel for a season and use it on a well-known sport-fisher with his charters. He did this from May last year until the season was over. I have just now gotten around to doing anything with the reel because I figured it’s about that time of year.
This reel is spooled with 500yds of 100# spectra braid, and it had about 150yds of 60# mono on top. They liked the reel very much and did in fact use it on every charter trip after I loaned it to them to see what would happen. They put plenty of meatfish and also a few bills on this reel, which is a 30# class sized reel. It was mounted on a Star 30-80# standup rod that was on sale at Haddrells West Ashley.
I took the reel apart today and serviced it. I only had around an hour to do this, so I did not take the full double drag system apart to show it. Doing so would require taking 3 small clips off the drag plate, and I do not have any of these clips laying around in case I lost one. Nor do I have any of the 3 small springs used under this same drag plate (90% sure I’d lose one if I went to taking this part of the reel apart). I felt there was no reason to inspect the bottom half of the drag where the other carbon fiber washer is anyhow. There was no buildup or corrosion visible and the reel’s drag was smooth before I took it apart.
Also, I did not take the handle section or shifter mechanism apart because this would have taken more time. Again, everything feels great as far as the shifter and the two handle bearings inside there. The shifter design in this reel is the same as in every other Avet two-speed to my knowledge. It isn’t too complex, but it is the most tedious part of the reel to take apart and put back together.
You may notice in the first picture how the reel says EX 4/02 in the laser etching- this is how I got this reel cheaper- it was a “blem” because of the “W” missing there. This reel is a Pro EXW4/02, which is the discontinued model replaced by the “Pro EXW30/2.”
FYI: I clean parts with either Corrosion-X oil or Penn Reel Grease and a rag. I have an empty small pill container that I put a dozen small screws, springs etc. in at the time and spray Corrosion-X in there and shake them up. All the frame screws are stainless going into aluminum, so I put grease on them before I screw them back in. I remove the rubber shields from the bearings and let them soak in corrosion-X as well. I do not grease the bearings- I spray corrosion-X in and replace the shields. The gears and shifter mechanisms get grease, and any place where dissimilar metals are get grease for insulation. I also put a light coat of grease all over the inner frame and a bit more grease where the harness lug holes are because that is where water and salt gets in on these reels. Not so much water gets in between the spool lip and frame as long as the reels are in strike position. Pretty much everything gets cleaned, sprayed with corrosion-X and then it gets greased or whatever. The white washers you will see below are Teflon and the black washers are plastic. They get grease to keep grit from getting between them and adjacent surfaces. I try not to leave too much excess grease in the reel where it can harm things by trapping grit and/or salt in the wrong places. Light coating of grease can never hurt though.
Here is the pictorial from start to finish. I show what things look like as I get to them and what they look like as I’m putting them back together after cleaning, regreasing etc. I will not make comments between pictures because I know this is already very long without that…..

those reels deserve better tools...

I had all my good tools stolen by some guy that's probably like stank bait's cousin or something. Stank, do you have a cousin that drives a marroon Aerostar van? Dude stood in front of me for 30 minutes and then wrote a bad check on a Sunday for 5 grand worth of stuff that he was already getting a steal on. I was young then......
The snap-on man will swap kobalt for blue point though right? (the Jimmy Johnson tool warranty is all but a joke....)

I had heard that when I sold craftsman junk for Sears. I have a lot of my 1/2" drive stuff in Kobalt for that reason.
Who makes Husky/home depot stuff? One dude told me MAC and another told me matco. ?????
I now have a Blackhawk set of tools as well just because I saw them dirt cheap and the set had a lot of specialty tools. I have not dealt with Stanley with any warranty issues on them yet.

That's why you get a business license and insurance to sell a product. I really am sorry to hear that you ran into that kind of problem but you had to know that you had it coming. Keep your chin up kid, they might make a tackle shop employee out of you before you know it. As far as the other thread is concerned, I never said I went offshore to check the inlet conditions. I'm lucky enough to spend a good bit of time riding my bike on Kiawah and I see what goes down on the Stono inlet end. I see 50' boats come and go at certain times of the year. Maybe you need to contact them, or just grow a set. |

Mac is blackhawk and husky...
Matco is sears and at 1 time napa, but now so much is overseas i am not sure if napa has changed..
another FYI,matco sockets are made by sunex.
Cornwell is Cornwell, they have no other outlet but their dealers, sort of nice not haveing to compete against sears/home depot/lowes for the exact same tool with a different name..but in the end all tool companys are w*****s...

That is some filthy info right there.
No wonder the craftsman 12pt sockets are just about worthless. I just about would not let someone buy them if I knew they would be using them professionally. Same with the non polished cheapo craftsman stuff. More of that stuff came back than we sold with the exception of fathers day, mem. day and Christmas. I would still rather have craftsman handtools than something with no warranty though. You cannot beat a Craftsman tape measure or tri-square for example. Buy it one time and don't lose it. You can get new/rebuilt ones every week if you have the time to get into a sears.
I thought Proto bought Blackhawk and then Stanley bought Proto. At least the blackhawks I have still say made in the USA on them.
Maybe I can afford some Cornwell stuff someday...
Is there a discount plan on refurbishes?????

Are you reelly that ignorant?
1)you need a business license to sell used stuff in the paper? 2)since I know a bit about tackle, my aim is to become a tackle shop employee? 3)By all means, tell everyone that I am full of $^&* when I say an inlet's marked channel 1/2 mi off the beach has only 6' of water in it at low tide. Did you ride your bike out there to check the depth or were you just cycling on the deck of one the 50 footers that went through at high tide? Either way, I'm sure it's better than a sonar transducer or the rods and cones in my eyes when I see white water and chocolate milk around the boat. I figure your perception is better than anywhere I could be coming from anytime we're on the internet.
Fritz, is this good enough?
If not I'll go into the bad check story.

Had to move to Columbia for a job. Had to do it fast. Put the big screen, lawnmower, tiller, utility trailer, toolbox and tools, etc. in the paper for sale. (Also a galaxy ski boat)
Dude came with his girlfriend to check out the TV. Ended up liking the stainless toolbox full of tools. Ended up saying he would be back for more money for the TV but he wanted the tools and tiller that day and he would get the TV but he only had so much room in the van. They pull out a checkbook and tell me it's her mom's checking account. I ask where mom is. They say, "you wanna a beer?" They crack open two fatweisers out of the cooler in the aerostar. I am told mom is in a nursing home but they have her permission to get these things for around the house. They get mom on the phone and I talk to "mom." It was good. Mom wanted the tiller. It was an awesome tiller. Mom wanted the toolbox full of tools- the 24V cordless drill too. Awesome. I'm about to get paid like $1600 bucks and another $1300 for the TV the next day. Oh yeah. They write the check, and I get all their info. SS numbers, addresses, drivers licenses... everything. Why didn't I know about certigy check processing?
Next morning I shoot towards columbia (I lived in Clemson) and stop at a branch of their bank in Irmo to get the check cashed. Sorry Sir but this account has insufficient funds. For real? I knew that. How long has the account been in the negative? For quite some time. Dang, can I get another fatweiser?
I go to a branch of my bank in Irmo and call into work and tell them I'm not going to be in that day. Sit down with one of my bank's people and tell them the deal. They get the scaliwag's bank on the phone. These are walhalla/westminster people I'm talking about getting on the phone, so we were getting somewhere. The lady's mom's bank tells us that they have been seeing crazy activity coming in on that account for a while. They put some older teller on the phone who knows the family. Yeah she is in the nursing home. She has alhtimers and all. Sorry.
Gimme my money. Stop playin. I have to go back to Anderson Co. where the sale occured and talk to the sheriff. Sheriff says they can't do anything until I get an affidavit of forgery from the drawee bank in walhalla. Aight. Go to walhalla. It isn't reelly a forgery Sir. This lady is an authorized signor on this account. For real? That sucks; bybye now.
Go back to Columbia the next day so that I don't get fired and get a call from a guy wanting to see the TV. Oh I forgot... I called the folks in the Aerostar. Phone no longer in service. So guy calls about the TV. I tell him I need cash- no exceptions. Meet him back at the house that night and load up the TV and have some money in hand. Should I skip work again to deal with the walhalla-ians or should I just...
Let it be an expensive lesson.
Statute has run on it, and I should have never taken a check. I knew it was bad before I even saw it.
I'm sure Bob knows the feeling.....
I take cash only from people now unless I know where somebody lives. I will let some buddies of mine that work for used car dealers and pawn shops now go and get my stuff if I am given a bad check like that again.
So don't be getting any ideas Stank. I know you need a good depth finder or pair of binoculars......

I notice that the this older model has the clicker and drag on the left side while the new Pro 30 has it on the right. Any reason for this?
On the check side. I have a buddy that was cutting up with the cashier in Wal-Mart and asked her what was penalty for returned checks. She told him $25. He asked if he could write her a check for $25 more than the total as to cover this charge. Well 2 manager signatures later and much pleading an apologizing he was allowed to leave with the merchandise.

I don't think there'd be as much room for the auto-disengage on the right side as there is in the left side of these 30-sized reels especially. Seems like the right side is a better location for right handers anyhow. With the new clicker knobs, it can be cut off or on with one finger and they don't get accidently cut off when somebody turns the handle forward like on the 4/02's.

Phin, I was just skimming the post, as far as that check, turn it into the county solicitor's office. Some now have a bad check prosecution unit. |

Some of us actually have high speed internet that allows us to view lots of pictures of boats, cars, reels, etc. I like lots of detailed pictures when someone explains a process.
