WilmingtonFishing.Com
For the past eight years CharlestonFishing.Com has grown, expanded, and grown again. Each year we have been amazed that the number of visits and participation in the site has continued to grow. As we began looking at where our visitors come from we began to realize that many people along the coast, both north and south of Charleston were using the site on a regular basis. We added sections for Myrtle Beach and Georgetown and for Hilton Head, Edisto and Savannah to the south. Part of the success we realize comes from the fact that the site provides good local information and if we branched out too far, geographically, we would begin to lose the very thing that made the site successful. Over the years we had several people mention to us that Wilmington could really use a website like CharlestonFishing.Com and finally this year we decided to branch out and start WilmingtonFishing.Com
As we did with the Charleston site, we are really relying heavily upon the local fishing population in Wilmington to tell us what they want in a site. We have taken many ideas from Charleston that were suggested to us over the years and incorporated them into Wilmington site so we feel like this site is definitely starting out much more useful, but we also realize there are things unique to the Wilmington area that will need to be implemented into the new site. We hope that over time we will be able to build the kind of camaraderie and fishing family we have on CharlestonFishing and that anglers will find the site informative, entertaining and friendships will be formed that exist outside of the site and onto the water.
If you are in the Wilmington area reading this newsletter we welcome you to come and join the site. If you have friends in that area that love to fish, we encourage you to tell them about the site. As with CharlestonFishing, everything on WilmingtonFishing.Com will be free to the public. Please email us with any suggestion or ideas you may have to make the site a great place to come and learn about fishing.

“Topwater Action” Campaign Volunteers have major impact on Oyster Restoration and Marine Habitat Enhancement
Columbia, S.C. – Wearing international orange “Oyster Recovery Team” t-shirts, Coastal Conservation Association South Carolina (CCA SC) members and volunteers from every corner of the Palmetto state converged at the Lowcountry Oyster Festival in Mt. Pleasant to participate in marine habitat enhancement.
Working with area volunteers, the group’s efforts were crucial to the collection of more than 1,100 bushels of clean, useable oyster clutch that will be used by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Marine Resources Division (SCMRD) in the restoration of oyster habitat.
“SCDNR’s oyster shell recycling program collects approximately 15,000 bushels of shells each year, and the shell collected from the Boone Hall event will provide a significant part of that,” said Mel Bell, Director of Fisheries Management with the SCMRD. “To have 1,100 bushels recycled from just one event is a tremendous boost. The CCA members and volunteers involved with this operation deserve congratulations.”
Described as the region’s largest oyster roast, the Lowcountry Oyster Festival annually consumes an estimated 65,000 pounds of oysters in one day. The opportunity to capture and recycle that much shell was the deciding factor in CCA SC getting involved.
The effort was the first of many in CCA SC’s new habitat initiative known as the “CCA Topwater Action Campaign.” Focusing on improving marine habitat and water quality issues, “Topwater Action” is a collaborative effort between CCA SC and the SCMRD staff. State-wide oyster recycling, habitat restoration, education, and a new adopt-a-creek program similar to adopt-a-highway efforts are the foundation of the campaign. The two organizations are working to identify coastal creeks and tributaries where habitat restoration and improvement will best benefit juvenile fisheries and marine resources.
“CCA SC’s work in the fisheries arena has been respected for years, and the organization has been credited for many marine conservation victories,” said CCA Campaign Chairman Gary Visor. “We want to expand on those victories by working to improve habitat and water quality for the future of South Carolina’s marine resources.”
CCA is the largest marine resource conservation group of its kind in the nation. With more than 95,000 members in 17 state chapters, CCA has been active in state, national and international fisheries management issues since 1977. CCA is dedicated to the conservation and protection of marine resources and to improving the current and future state of saltwater fishing for recreational anglers and future generations of fishermen. The Final Word

The fishing this past week was pretty good. Offshore the bottom fishing is going strong with some really nice fish being caught. There has been a pretty good wahoo bite out beyond the ledge and there were even a few dolphin reported last week. Keeping an eye on warm water spots coming off of the stream should produce some fish is the weather will allow some boats to make it out. The cold front hitting us this week from mid week on will make fishing offshore pretty tough. Inshore the warmer weather early in the week seemed to help with the redfish bite. Fish are still schooled up and in some instances penned up by porpoises, but they are feeding if you can catch them at the right time. The trout fishing seems to be really hit and miss, which is just about right for this time of year. The Sheepshead are out over the reefs if you can get past the black sea bass to get to them. Currently the weather for this weekend looks a little better. We can all wait and hope for the best.

Tight lines…
