Optimax

Looked at a boat with one, 150hp 2004, 800hrs. Never had any issues, no service records do to woner servicing himself, just plugs and footoil, had an alarm on sea trial, oil alarm, talked myself out of it alreay but how about some other opinions. I said ticking time bomb, I already had a yamaha 200 2 stroke go down a cyclinder and that was a beautiful repair bill. Thoughts?

Don’t buy unless you have a technician hook up and pull the fault history and also troubleshoot that oil alarm. Otherwise they are very good engines.

2004 and newer opti’s are great motors
800 hours is a bit on the high side
a good diagnostic and negotiate the price based on findings

I have read many good things about them, the issue I have is that its not well taken care of. Has lots of fading on the mid section, anodes are pretty worn, rust on the trim motor, dried salt under the cowl, ect. I have had several outboards so far and kept them in excellent physical and mechanical condition, which is why I have talked myself out of this one. I put 1400hrs on a Merc elpt 90, with nothing but general service, but had a paper trail to prove it by my tech so when I went to sell it I had proof it had been cared for. I also had to rebuild a yamaha 200 Salwater series with 500 hrs that went down a cyclinder and know how expensive a rebuild can be. A “good deal” can go south quickly if you have to repower not long after purchase. I Have talked myself out of it already, I can see major service in its near future.
