No start no turnover no sound

Johnson 115 4 stroke not turning over at all no sound but hum
boat sat longer than normal this year due to family stuff but last month I went to fish and nothing… thought seven year old battery would be culprit… tested low cranking amps … REPLACED and same issue…Replaced gas bulb and line thing no fuel and it was kinda rotten… notta… Unhooked Battery and cleaned cable connections … Then it started up like four times… thought yea… decided to test drive today and notta again…so I’m reading it could be neutral issue, solenoid issue, ignition issue, rotten cable issue… Anybody experience this and what throws me off the most is I got it to start last week multiple times… Chris V you have helped me many times and when i’ve failed you have fixed the issues yourself… Any input would be appreciated…

thanks

and tight lines to all

Same thing happened to me last week…figured a bad connection…disconnected the battery cables and was running my bait knife (was on the water) along the leads when I realized my negative cable was rotted through…cut off the last few inches, stripped plastic off and jury rigged a way to synch the cable down with just the wingknot until I got home…hope yours is an easy fix as well.

did you have to replace the whole cable or just cut it back a few inches??? thanks will try that asap

glad you made it home safe

Luckily I just took a few inches off and the cable looked considerably better than the end that literally broke off once I bent it…

It was weird though, looking back on it…I aways start the boat at home before heading to the landing…it took longer to start and was humming instead of cranking for the first few tries…hopefully that’s all your issue is, keep me posted!

that didn’t work added new leads and cut coreded wire back a few inches worth the try thanks for the idea…

(**(). Are you getting power to your accessories from the same battery?

have you tried jumping the solenoid?

If I’m posting, its because I’m sitting here at work, dreaming about fishing.

yes power on everything else, have not tried jumping the solenoid not sure how…

Try tapping the starter with a rubber mallet or a block of wood while somebody holds the key start to on. May kick it over.

that right there is a protip mdaddy

Sounds like flywheel sticking on starter !! Lube starter shaft !!

If tapping it with a block of wood don’t work get a bigger hammer, then try duck tape! Defently an electrical problem, try jumping the selenoid! Try hooking jumper cables to starter.

So hit the starter pretty good notta did it a few times…Will try to test solenoid asap… I truly feel its electrical… or a neutral issue… Any other ideas would be appreciated…

Don’t just tap side of starter, tap and grease the bendix and bendix shaft too (sprocket on top). Try lightly taping on top of bendix too. If you get any result there, your brushes could be corroded/shot on the inside of starter. You could try cleaning them, but you can usually pick them up online for so cheap, it aint worth hassle of rebuilding.

be careful spraying WD40 or something similar one the bendix. those bendix gears have a little clutch pack in them to help prevent damage to the starter or flywheel. if you get WD40 on that clutch pack, it can cause the bendix gear to slip.

As others have mentioned, you need to be turning your key while trying this tapping to get any result…

Test for voltage at starter.
