Spanish, do y'all like using wire

when casting to them?? Have caught quite a few in last couple trips for them but, have paid the price to some degree with cutoffs using 20lb flouro. If so, any advice on wire would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

NN

Last year I put a wire later on. Wife fishing fluorocarbon. She easily out fished me 10 to 1. I took the wire off.

I’ve heard of that, therefore didn’t go for wire. Probably works but, what size wire to use??

Thanks OTC,

NN

Spanish are leader and hardware shy. Excellent vision and they strike very accurately. Lose the wire.

My go to lure for sm is a 4in piece of a jumbo red plastic straw , trebble hook/w 3in wire and swivel inside , 20test momo shock leader 15-20 ft long trolled 30-60 yds back on surface and a duplicate trolled on down rig… yellow straws work also but are harder to find !!!
these work for me as well as most others and are dirt cheap , you can get the straws from most greasy spoon hamburger joints and ice-cream shops , try em before discounting them , go catch em up !!!

The straws really do work George! I have used them with an extra long shank hook and never got bit off.

Several days last year down on the west coast of Florida we ran into huge schools of Spanish. They hit just about everything we threw to them and everything we fished was on a mono leader, no wire. Didn’t loose one fish to a break/bite off. That was my first and only experience with them but it was so much fun and they are really good grilled.

I hope AOC don’t find out you’re using plastic straws.

Got a chuckle out of that, OTC.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.

BTW, Publix and Walmart on Ladys Island are no longer using plastic bags. Also, someone mentioned a restaurant that was using some type of pasta for a straw[:0]. Pretty cool. IMO. If that works…

Wonder if they ask, white or wheat…

I fish the Gulf a lot for Spanish and the water is so clear that you can forget wire. They’re sight feeders so they will hit shiny hardware like swivels and new bullet weights. If I use anything it’s black or blacked out weights with 30lb. Vanish. The straw rigs work well on the Atlantic side with stirring sticks, red, white, and white with a red stripe. I get them at Bojangle’s, Hardee’s, and others that have the larger diameter ones.

I’d rather fish than eat.

I never use wire on Spanish and have never lost one due to using mono.

WOW, I think I just learned a few things in this thread, Thanks !
