North carolina black powder.

I have 62 acres one hour north of Charrlotte on a river that is mostly hardwoods, a few clearings. and creeks. Booootiful property. As usual, the NC deer must have learned from the SC deer how to make fun of me. My home sits on a hill with a level clearing about 50’ below and another clearing 100’ below that and then the river. Yesterday, when on a very important business call from Dubai, a nice 8Pt walked slowly from left side of upper clearing to right side. I almost hung up the phone.
My workers were here Monday and told me that two big bucks were fighting at the lower clearing at 12:30:rage:
Yesterday morning I drove down a gravel road to the lower clearing and parked about 150’ from my blind. I noisily walked down to blind crunching on the gravel and there was a young 6 pt eating my corn. I could not believe he stayed there with all that noise. Meanwhile, at my SC property the bucks are having a ball.

Sounds like you should have no problem eating venison this coming year. Any apple trees on the property?

No. Have one pear tree

The 8 pt did the same thing yesterday at 4PM. Walked from left to right. He was a little lower on the hill and I did not see him until he was 20’ from disappearing into the woods. The river has overflowed its banks. I’ll post a pic of river in a little while

Nice view. Any more problems with poachers?

Of course have poachers. They are the neighbors.
Update on the hapless hunters in the family. Son missed 3 times in two days at same 12 pointer.
He was down in the field that was flooded in pic as it has dried up. Turns out he was putting in one wad of pwder instead of 2

Back to SC property Tuesday. Giving NC property time to rest and hopefully that 12 point will come back Sat as rifle season opens SAt

Update. This is getting ridiculous. My son took 3 shots at a 12 point last week with black powder rifle and since he was only putting in 1 wad instead of 2 the bullet probably went 50 yds instead of a 100. OK. It was his first time using black powder.
Sat was opening day of rifle season in NC and my son(who is a good stalker) was standing next to a tree down close to where buck had been coming out. well, he came out about 30 yds but was moving pretty fast and by the time he shot the at the deer it was over 100 yds quartering away. Add to that buck fever as this is the biggest deer he has ever seen close up and you know what happened.

That was Sat.
Sunday morng he goes back to the same area and I go to my spot. we both heard a shot at about 7AM. My son realizes that he left his phone in the car and goes back to get it in case I was the one shooting. He then goes back to his spot and on the way down the hill the giant sees him from about 200-300 yards away and turns around and walks back into the woods. 30 minutes later as my son was staring at the clearing where he expected Mr. big to show and Mr Big outsmarted him again by circling around behind him and coming out 20 yds from him. Buck snorted and was gone.

It seems that Mr bg thought my son was a doe from that original distance and decided to check it out coming in downwind. There is a reason these guys get to grow old. The only good news is that my son’s bleating and grunting must be realistic.

Stay tuned for the next chapter in this saga. Do you think the Outdoor channel would air this story:smiley:
