1993 Merc 25hp overhaul

Test. Been unable to create a post.

If this works, I’m adding pix and questions about some overdue maintenance on my little motor

Awesome.

First off, go read ALL of the thread started by FishBones.

Then copy and paste Palmer’s step-by-step post into MS Word in font size 22 or larger, print it, and cover up some of your kids’ drawings on the front of the refrigerator with it- it’s gold.

Now: I took the lower unit off my old trusty Mercury. Hadn’t run in a couple years, was trying to work on idle throttle, etc when it first ran due to way over-revving before warm (still have to address that), but noticed it had stopped peeing. Couldn’t get lower lube screw out to do 80w flush and fill, also couldn’t get the last of 4 bolts to remove lower unit. They both moved after PB Blaster (yes, Fred- I’ve heard Kroil is the best and intend to get some) and a breaker bar for the bolt. Lots of corrosion from Al vs SS, same to a lesser degree for the smaller bolts on the water pump. Got the foot mostly clean of gunk with nylon brushes and gas, at least the mating surfaces. Not sure what to do about the corrosion inside the bolt holes. BIL says a “chase tap” that’s made to back cut the threads clean when threaded in and removed. I was thinking brass or steel bottle brush and more gas. Here’s where y’all’s vastly superior mechanical knowledge and experience come in.

Impeller had 2 broken fins and the others were warped pretty bad. Rest of cooling system seems clear, can blow air through it all. Waiting on re-assembling water pump till I can get the bolt holes clean. And yes, I do have some blue corrosion block grease. Am I going to want to use a torque wrench on pretty much everything when it goes back together?

MD, I really appreciate the offer you made in the other post. Would be my honor to meet up with you over a beer, motor, dog party, you name it.

Thanks all, will try to post some pix later. Have to wrangle younguns now, then got a date with an oyster mound on a minus tide

this is exciting

Let us know if the oysters are salty,I might go next week if all this freshwater has been flushed out.TIA. Evinrude makes a coating specially made for them bolts, but grease might be just as good, the last can I got was from Seel’s.

Sup

I been drinking too early.

Gnu I had a 25 Merc foot somewhere. Don’t recall the year…

9 Tooth Spline on the drive shaft and the length is 16" from the pump base…measurements taken while drinkin.
Crooked shift shaft.

Give me a reason to go crash at Bonzoz.

I’ll look for numbers tomorrow…

IMO,
Thread the bolts back through with PB/ Krill oil and be patient. The crud took years to form…takes time to get it right…

All else fails… drill it out and throw some bolts in it…it’s a 1993 motor.

Torque Wrench??? Pfttttt

No tighter than you want to loosen it…or break it. Grease makes everything better with metal…IMO.

I’m ready to party at Bonzoz and check out the integrity of the porch…

this is exactly the sort of wisdom i was hoping for.

S, it occurred to me that the oysters might not be too salty, but it didn’t fully occur to me that 25,000 other people wanted to go enjoy a fresh February sea breeze on Folly Beach yesterday around 1pm. We got no closer than Grimball Rd before turning around, seemed it would have taken till low tide just to make Sol Legare by the pace of traffic. Came home and drank too much too early.

9 spline, 16" to top of water pump, bent the prop shaft a few years back on a rock. measured while hungover and dewy… yers looks way better than mine MD!

sorta concerned that the youtube dude said a washer should come out with the shift shaft upon lower unit removal and no such washer made an appearance. maybe i’ll catch it on the way back in?

also sorta concerned that the rubber bushing around the drive shaft is cracked and there’s a spring showing. she’s 28 though like you say, so i’m gonna have to play it where it lies. i just need my metal boat back in the fleet!

Them peas look good, mine is only about four inches tall.

Fertilize them with the gear oil out of lower unit…

I am fragile. Not like a flower. But like a bomb.

22 life’s a day

Before this thread gets OT… the foot is yours if you want it.

Gear oil on peas will keep the bugs off but may give you the scowers.

ahhh… that’s a big 10-4, driver. happy to give fair value!

and I’ll throw in some of the biggest sub-tidal singles you’ve laid yer peepers on

Will be in touch via PM once the morning list is a little more checked off. Thank ya, sir!

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…you gots mail.

picking this back up after putting it down a while. snow peas had to get ripped out so i could put cukes in, and those just started climbing. third round of snow peas might not get to do anything before the heat, but the last carrots are just getting right. pollen, gnats, and oak leaves.

i finally got around to sitting down and putting the new water pump kit in the foot. as mentioned, i cleaned up all the mating surfaces, then greased the area where the drive shaft has the cracked rubber underneath that. was a b***h to get the upper pump housing shut on all the fins going the right direction, the little nylon washers lined up, loose o-ring in the right position hanging on upside down to the housing, etc. but it turned fine once I got it tightened up so i decide to test it. all this might turn into just a learning exercise if i can catch up with MDaddy sometime soon, since my lower unit has a bent prop shaft and his don’t. heck of an offer, props again to you sir.

as suggested, I sprayed some corrosion block type stuff up into the main mounting holes for the lower unit, brushed some stuff out, and have been taking the 5/8" bolts and running them in and out with some grease. on the reassemble they went back in almost without needing a wrench till they came tight (i made sure to keep the bolts in their original holes). didn’t torque them to anything specific, so i’ll be revisiting that.

motor fired right up and ran on the hose, appears to move water just fine again. doesn’t want to idle very well, but I have the full throttle range so i’m hoping some seafoam and high RPMs will keep me from having to do any more work right now… mostly because i NEED this boat next month for an annual river trip. which brings me to the next phase of this project.

anybody got a trailer…?

not too bad, right?

BUT

kind of like fire needs 3 things to eat

and plants need 3 things to grow

I need a trailer under my boat and motor for the triumvirate to amount to anything more than a dang ole yard ornament.

here’s a wild guess. call tommy stone at trailer shop mt pleasant. he’s loaned us stuff several times when we were in a bind to move stuff.
