Learned something today

I have pretty substantial hearing loss especially in my right ear. Initially from the Marine corps. And I just kept on making it worse and worse. Working construction, skill saws jackhammers . Playing with motorcycles, race cars shooting guns. I’m pretty good about wearing ear protections with firearms. Oh yeah let’s not good old rock and roll.
But something I never realized.
Wind noise… there’s a lot of counterdicting stuff on the net. But I’ll go with what my audiologist says…
At 65 mph bike boat whatever, we are getting blasted with over 100 DB of wind noise.
Cruising down the water in your boat at 35 mph you can experience 70 to 80dbs.
Consistent exposure to above 70 decibels can start causing hearing issues. Over 100 can cause instant and permanent damage.
Just something to think about.
The positive thing about being half-a$$ed def. Going into Walmart Lowe’s or somewhere like that. If I have my hearing aids in, I turn them off. Much more pleasant that way.
I’m due new hearing aids. They are Bluetooth. This will be great. Where I really struggle is on the telephone especially with female voices.

I need some hearing aids as well. Lot’s of Rock and Roll and firing weapons.

Would like them to be something that will translate to Engrish while speaking to a call center in India!!!

Freaking ridiculous!

My hearing loss is from 5"guns on Navy tin cans and cruising plane guard beside aircraft carriers - the planes were just as loud on take off and landing sometimes with no warning Our hearing protection back then was those ear muff looking things with foam . My hearing loss is certain tones and apparent difficulty with female - I never come home with what she sent me for

Please read: do not respond to the political forums trouble makers that spew filth and sewage with their name calling and constant insults. It feeds their sickness and harms this site as EF and others have noted

I can sympathize. Loud Rock-n-Roll and 30+ years on the range plus all the other times my ears have been assaulted by loud sounds. I hear but, many sounds/voices sound muffled. Close caption is my friend.

"Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It's Hand", but really, who cares?

Never thought about wind noise.

You are gonna love the Bluetooth aids. I don’t wear mine due to dirty and dusty conditions most of the time, but were they really help me is in a restaurant. They have noise cancelling and you can actually understand people instead of all the forks clanking. Another neat function, you can actually place your phone close to someone if background noise is really bad and use it’s microphone to hear. T.V. you can actually hear what the actors are saying instead of being muffled out by background music.

Outdoors is amazing, but I’m still having trouble pin pointing location of sound source. With out you hear a noise and point straight to it, with aids you point somewhere near it, maybe. It’s getting better. Go out at night and the frogs will almost scare you! Bird whistles, dogs crunching a bone, car going down the road, neighbor farting… They won’t stop the ringing though. That’s their for life.

Let us know how they work out!

Waterfowl guiding most likely source of my date with the plastic Lima beans. First set out of pocket back before insurance would help after hearing loss was added to disability list. We focused on harvesting Canadian geese in the 70s thru the 90s started with a 3 bird limit taking a 4 man party. Hunted from field pits which were nothing more than camouflaged fox holes. If the ■■■■■ landed off my end, cuz they couldn’t resist my Sean Mann call, I’d duck under 4 12 gauges spitting number 2 lead. Remember ears ringing afterwards but was young, dumb and full of … well you know the saying. Blue teeth was nice addition to stream directly with phone and other devices and you can select different settings like “restaurant “ for background noise, “outdoors “ for wind etc. What I hate is the whistling when you put your hand over your ear or lay down on a “My Pillow “ dang ■■■■■■■■. Got rechargeables now but had no problem with batteries changing prior. If you’re a profuse sweater like me be sure to get the cotton sock covers before I got them I had problems cuz they hate moisture. Now me eyes are failing but hey it’s better than pushing up daisies!

“ RBF, quite frankly you are full of schitt. In my opinion you are primarily to blame for the degradation of this particular fishing website. You dilute this place with your incessant desire to be relevant by posting constantly whatever cut and paste cartoon or quip you dig up only God knows where just to be "heard". It really must be miserable where you are, if not for you then for those around you.” EF 4/27/21

Thank goodness I don’t have ringing of the ears. That would interfere with the voices. Hahaha.

You find things offensive. I find things funny. That's why I'm happier than you.

OTC,

when you talk to the VA doc, tell him you are interested in the Phonak aids.

also ask him for one of the travel chargers, its a small battery pack you can put in the truck or pocket and will charge the phonak hearing aids at least 3 good times. You won’t need it much, but trust me…plus they will gladly give you one if you ask.

Its a gamechanger for soft voices, restaurants, and for me still hunting. just be sure and click the volume down before shooting unless you are shooting suppressed subsonic stuff.

The downside is now you can’t act like you don’t hear what she said anymore…

Did it take you long to get used to location of sound when outdoors? Doc said it would get better. I hear some stuff and many times it will throw me off on pinpointing source of noise.

Yes, some things. You can turn your “good ear” or best hearing side towards where you think the noise is coming from and it helps a little. The way I understand it is that your brain can tell very small differences in the time a sound hits one ear vs another. Think of it like like the old GPS system of TD’s (time differentials).

I remember my grandfather saying “come here boy and course those hounds for me”. I would tell him nearly exactly where the dogs were, and where they were going. Now I need someone to “course” stuff for me.

The phonak hearing aids the VA gives out are really top of the line technology, but sadly they can only help so much with spatial hearing and specific sound location.

Nobody said getting old was a bargain.

They gave me the Starkey brand made for iPhone. Next time I’m due I’ll ask about the phonak.
