I remember it like it was yesterday though it was over 35 years ago now. For my 10 year birthday present I was hot after a tacklebox. My neighborhood buddies and I have gotten real big into fishing the adjacent neighborhood ponds and I needed something to tote my gear in on my bicycle. This was back in the day when Sears Roebuck sent out a huge catalog a couple times year and it was typically loaded with outdoor supplies. After mulling over the option for days I picked out a yellow Gamefisher tackle box that came fully stocked with terminal tackle and a good selection of freshwater lures. I showed it to my mom and she ordered it the very next day; this was at least three weeks ahead of my birthday. Every day for the next 3-weeks solid I would come home from school and ask my mom if it had arrived. Mind you this was well ahead of the "tracking updates" that we receive these days; back then it was pretty much place the order and wait. If something didn't show up after a few months then you started to call. Finally my birthday arrived and no tacklebox! I was so disappointed! Realizing my disappointment my mom called Sears to see if they can provide any type of idea at least on when the package shipped. I don't remember the exact information she received but basically they told her if it did not arrive within the next month to call back. Though I'm sure my parents had some sort of other very small gift there for me the tackle box was truly the only gift I cared about! About a week after my birthday I arrived home from school to see a package sitting on the front porch. My mom had not even heard the UPS man come that day. I ran up and saw the box was from Sears, I quickly ran inside and opened the box. There she was, my first tackle box, yellow just like the picture showed, Gamefisher stamped in the corner and already loaded with gear. I feel quite certain that my mom made me complete my homework that day but shortly there after I was on my bike with tackle box in one hand and rod and reel in the other to go chase down some fish.

Having my own tackle box was almost like going through a right of passage as I moved to becoming a more serious angler. I still have that yellow tackle box to this day! This past week my oldest son turned nine. I surprised him with his very first tackle box. Sure he received a handful of other things but the lures and box definitely brought the most excitement! Obviously weather has not been very conducive but he has already asked me multiple times when are we going fishing?

As we roll into the New Year many folks are making resolutions. One of my commitments this year is to take my kids fishing more. Getting an 9, 8 and 3 year on the water and old hooked can be hard work, but my parents did it for my brothers and I and I am so very grateful. If you have kids I challenge you to get them on the water, if you don't have your own children then take a family member with their children or a neighbor with kids. From my own experience I can attest that time on the water and the conversations that surround leave a very valuable and good impression.

Tight lines...
