Here’s my favorite 8 wt reel… I took this photo when I first got it. I’ve retrieved some large prey using it. Now 5 years old and it still works well.

How much is he looking to spend and what is he going to be targeting?

If just inshore stuff - reds, trout, etc - check out any of the Lamson reels (Konic, Guru, Velocity). If he may be using the 9 wt. to target something a little stronger - say albies - and he has the extra coin, I’d go with a Nautilus CCF #8.
