Manatee

Got to get me a good camera. This brute was swimming up a creek Thursday with incoming tide. Was standing about 12 feet above when it swam under us. Surfaced a couple of times but too far away for phone.

Pictures don't have to be pretty to get the point across. Good (informative) picture.

Thanks, would just like to get better pics. The zoom feature quit working on the phone or it could have been a little better. Was told that was 3rd day in a row for that to happen.

One of the Edisto fishing guides posted some GREAT pictures of a huge manatee early this summer.

Found it!

Thanks. Pea pod is right, they do like water from a hose. At Patriots point they used to hang out where the water from the ice machine dripped of the dock. The guys on the tour boats would have to hang a hose on opposite side of dock and let it trickle so they could move one of the boats.

That was a great experience! Those manatees are huge. I still talk about that.

BTW don’t worry with the expensive better camera. I took these pictures with my Samsung mobile phone. It’s all in how you hold it.

If I could have gotten closer than 10 or 12 feet it would have been better also. I’m playing with a sprint blackberry that I’m lucky if it works at all 90% of the time.

It’s illegal to “water” a manatee, so don’t get caught giving them a hose. They will associate humans with a handout, making them more vunerable to boat strikes. They get plenty of freshwater from seeps as they move away from their FL rivers in the summer.

The ice machin is at the end of the dock and the dripping cool water attracts them to it. They only turn the hose on to a trickle long enough to get them away from which ever boat is getting ready to back out. Then they turn off the water. They are just trying not to harm any of them.
