Poling the flats with an intern - made the effort

Took a college intern out yesterday after work in search of potential new flats to fish in the Wando and pulled up to the entrance location and found 4 reds. 3 cruising and 1 tailing. Ol boy had a hard time compensating the cross wind and only managed 1 fish that crushed his artie but didn’t get the desired hook set. The next mile of poling the high tide proved nada. Told him it was time to cross the river to a guaranteed flat with an hour of daylight left it was now crunch time. Found 5 more big boys cruising under the surface and then the 5th fish had a perfectly placed cast from the heavens and I told the intern twitch it twice, he did and the explosive ambush attack from the red happened. I told him the fish is on and set the hook…again not the penetration needed to create a pic right before he heads back home. The fish came unhooked and he was still thrilled to see how sight fishing was done down here in our parts. One more memory added to the collection!!!

Nice read and I have to get that sight fishing off my bucket list

Got any intern positions open?

Nice report. I enjoy taking rookies out fishing.

Throwing a curltail grub, one guy told me he had a nibble.
Um, yeah, that was an overslot redfish you just missed.
We watched it swim right past the boat.
I just laughed and laughed.

Eric if you can ever swing a trip to the LA bayou, its a great way to do a ton of sight fishing. I learned a lot last Fall when Ralph and I went there.
